2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

God no.

Given the vast number of games in the season, the law of averages usually pan out over that time, and indicates what team is seeded where. Using the author's argument, what about the bubble teams?

Last year's shootout for the playoffs between the Rangers/Flyers is an extreme, but who's to say that the Rangers weren't the better team overall?

What if, due to injury or whatever, the #8 team with 4 games to go, goes belly up and falls to #9?

Horrible idea.

Re: 2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

No, you don't. You put the puck on the stick of the player whose skills best fit the situation, otherwise it would've been Lundqvist trying to score there. Gaborik sucks at shootouts. How many times does this have to be explained before people will understand? That fact doesn't change just because it's the last game of the season.

We're not paying him $7 million a year to not have the puck on his stick when the game and season are on the line.

Stats are just that, stats...Games are won on the ice. All it takes is once and I'm sorry I want my best player with the puck on his stick when the season is on the line rather than Olli "used puck bag" Jokinen.

You're paying him 7M to score during the game to score during the game to prevent it from going to the shootout. And games are won by stats. If your team has the better stats than the other team at the end of the game, your team wins!

Except he's not the best player with the puck on his stick in a shootout. Maybe you could have him save shots too, since you're paying him $7 million and he's your best player. Just ignore the part where he's no good at it.

Dumb drunk chick accidentally kicks in a wall at the Boston Garden, posts it online...

Re: 2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

Bad way to cap a great week for the Canadiens: Andrei Markov expected to miss "at least 3 months" after he reinjured his right knee last night. He had only been back for 7 games, and continues a string of major injuries for him in the past two years. Given that he's unrestricted free agent at the end of the year, it's quite possible that management will walk away and hand the keys over to Pernell Karl full time.

Still, beating Vancouver, Boston, and Carolina by a combined scored of 12-3 was nice. Maybe this team is better than I gave them credit for. Interetsing stat: only team in the NHL to not allow more than 3 goals in regulation any game this year.

The Kings are having a pretty nice start to their season.

Completely incorrect. Teams with better stats lose games all the time.

All that matters who gets the W and who gets the L.

They are; not sure I see that lasting/them being a top 3 team out West when the playoffs roll around. Quick is playing above his head; nor can I see guys like Jarret Stoll or Justin Williams keeping their pace and suddnely becoming point-per-game players at this stage of their careers.

Williams will get hurt just like he does every season. Stoll's scoring all comes down to getting set up for one-timers especially on the power play. I don't think Quick is really playing above his head, hes a pretty good goalie and they've got nice defense in front of him. They'll probably end up behind the Sharks in the division and be 4-6 in the conference when the season ends though. The playoff run comes down to whether or not they can make a trade for a goalscorer at the end of the year.

Number of goals scored is a stat.

You must be joking with this Gaborik stuff, right? HE IS NOT GOOD AT SHOOTOUTS. How do you not understand that?

Because Olli Jokinen is so much better

All I'm saying is that if I'm behind the bench, I want the puck on my best player's stick when the season is on the line. Gaborik is my best player. period.

At shootouts, yes, he is so much better. 14/36 is significantly better than 2/18. "I want the puck on my best player's stick when the season is on the line" is cliched sportswriter tripe, you want the player whose skills are best suited to the situation. If the Rangers were killing a penalty late in that game, you'd want your best penalty killers on the ice, not your best players, and in a shootout you want your best shootout takers.
