118th Congress - Neutered Dog Attempts to Legislate

The rule really should just be whoever gets the most votes, plurality or not. If you’re able to rally more members behind you than anyone else manages to, you should be speaker.

What this and McCarthy's Speaker vote highlight is Republicans do not know how to count votes. Nancy Pelosi knew how to count votes and she knew how to hold the coalition together. Why the Republicans want everyone to see them acting like monkeys humping a football is beyond me.

She is a fraud she proved that on 1/6.

ALL of the remaining Republicans in office are frauds when it comes to preserving the Republic and defending the Constitution. It's just assumed, because if they were insufficiently loyal to Wee Donnie One Term and MAGA, then they're no longer reps and/or they couldn't win their primary.

This is the part of the movie where Drew and the NYT wonders why the Democrats aren't fixing the Republican's mess, and laying it at Biden's feet.

I am not even talking about that...she flat out lied saying AOC was misrepresenting how dangerous things were where they were hiding.

Mace changes her stances based on the network she is on. She is the perfect example of a certain Meredith Brooks song from back in the day...

Lol sounds like emmer would be up next if Jordan fails

If the GOP had anyone that understood strategy he would have been the first choice. He sucks mind you and is a full on hater of Democracy but he is the Whip so he is probably the only one who has the clout to really force the issue and he is way less offensive than Scalise or Gym. He likely is able to cobble a coalition together after the first vote if he fails...

I gotta think Gym (despite his weasel smile for the cameras) is really upset. He had a Faux News pundit emailing any of the "Never Gyms" trying to strong arm them into voting for him. Not to mention he was putting on the full court press all weekend...and he still fell well short. Even if he cleaves off some or all of the Scalise and McCarthy votes he still is short. As long as there is "Other" votes out there he is likely not going to win.

This can't work, as the point of the speaker vote is to demonstrate at least notionally a leader who can command a majority on an actual vote later. You have to have the juice to forge a coalition, not just have the largest of many blocs.

It's okay to have a majority that hates you. But you do need to show that you can at least cobble together a majority to conduct House business, or, "you don't have the votes."

The end game is, after all, governance. And that is what is stopping the GOP from working competently -- they don't care about governance, they care about Hatred Signaling to their slathering orcs, because that's what appeals to conservative voters in our country and, increasingly, the world.

This is the Ben Garrison caucus. It's too stupid to understand issues; it's too spiteful to be constructive. Like a toddler with a full diaper, it only knows that it wants to scream.

I assume what we are seeing is just the very early stages of the natural progression to multi-parties in Congress. The Republican caucus, as we now know it, will be fractured into 2-3 different groups, as will the current Democratic caucus, and they'll form coalition groups in the House and elect their speaker.

Primary elections exist so no, not happening.

No.

No. The Democratic caucus is voting unanimously, straight down the line, every time.

This is a problem with the Right, full stop. You have been coddling Nazis and criminals, pretending they are normal, protecting them, egging them on, for you own short term gain. And, LOL, now the leopard has turned on you.

This is neither a systemic issue nor an evolution of American democracy. It's the result of a 40-year failure of ethics and intellect by conservatives.

You played yourself.

If every state had the system we use in Alaska, jungle primary, top 4 general election with RCV, I could maybe see this country moving towards a coalition system. But, primary elections exist and they’re a huge reason why we have this mess.

Gerrrymandering is the vast majority of the other reasons why.

Bingo.
