'09-'10 D-III Bracketology

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

Are you kidding????? It could take well into tomorrow to decide which Eastern team to screw over if any at all. Who gets the other pool C after Platts?

NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Committee: Garnet Asmundson, Hamline coach (chair); Steven E. Nelson, Wisconsin-Superior athletic director; Cheryl Aaron, Massachusetts-Boston assistant athletic director; Michael Letzeisen, ECAC Division III director of sport administration; Andrew McPhee, Trinity coach.
If the above is accurate, how could the coach of Trinity not vote for his own team(should he even be on the committee?) Hopefully Nelson lobbies heavily for another western team to get the other Pool C spot. hoping it's a 4-3 split:)

Coaches typically recuse themselves from the discussion when their team is involved. That's how the selection process works.

I was hoping that Nelson would figure out a way to finagle Superior in there!!! lol

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

Thanks GJ for that post.

I guess I would ask why information such as that reported by 4and20 above is prominently posted at USCHO and in "summary" descriptions by NCAA when, according to the info reported by GoJackets, nothing like what is reported by 4and20 is actually used by the NCAA operatives to determine seeding or hosting.

In other words, the criteria usually presented by the powers-that-be as the NCAA policies for determining seeds and hosts is just fluff. Those criteria don't have any real bearing on these issues because regional rankings and proximities and costs trump all else according to the info reported by GoJackets.

Essentially, what this means is that they have so many published "policies" at cross-purposes with each other that it permits them to do almost anything they want without ever having to actually explain the conformance of their decisions with their ranking and selection and hosting policies. The perfect system for the perfect bureaucracy!

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

I think it's a toss-up Trinity/Lake Forest, but I think Amherst, as defending champion, NESCAC champion, and 2 losses, gets the bye.

That screws LF by setting up a GAC-RF western playoff to host, and Trinity plays, 5-2 split. Additional rationale: LF didn't make their conference finals, Trinity took Amherst to OT.

East round:

Amherst bye

Norwich @ Elmira
Trinity @ Plattsburgh

Well in the National Collegiate women's tournament(aka D1) the 1 hosts the 8, 2 host 7, etc down the line. At the D3 level, money is a factor and they do things regionally and then nationally. It sort of makes sense if you step back and look at it. Lets take the best team from here and the best team from there and make them play. Where it would get screwy is if the top 2 seeds in the tournament were in the west, they would play eachother in the first round...which would be unfair.

It will be very interesting to see how things go when we get up to an 8 team tournament....as unless Adrian is in it every year, they will likely have to fly a team in the first round.

Why would Amherst getting #1 seed affect Lake Forest/Trinity getting in?

Judging from the D3 mens selections...anything is possible at this point in time.

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

assuming Amherst gets the bye and the NCAA wants to use geographic location nad money reasoning, I see these matchups in the east:

Plattsburgh hosting Norwich
Elmira hosting Trinity

for these reasons:

Trinity to Platty is 270 mi and about 4hrs 23 min
Norwich to Platty is 80.4 mi and about 1hr 55 min
total of 350.4 miles

Trinity to Elmira is 301 mi and about 4hrs 50 min
Norwich to Elmira is 347 mi and about 6hrs 24 min
total of 648 miles
*I used google maps

If the NCAA is so concerned about money there's no way they send two teams more than 300 miles for a game when they can send both for a combined 350

just my .02

I think you nailed it.

I think you nailed it.

If the NCAA is going to hold themselves to the hosting criteria listed in the division iii hockey championship book, attendance history and revenue possibilities are two of the criteria. 684 for yesterday's two games in plattsburgh, 663 for the championship today = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

are you talking about hosting the tourny in Platts?

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

sure am. i'm not so sure the bus mileage matters. the ncaa is paying for the bus and driver regardless. and amherst hardly has a suitable facility. pretty sure there's only two locker rooms. if trinity goes to norwich and amherst to elmira, the trips aren't terribly long

not gonna happen...I can promise Gustavus/River falls would shatter 660. They also have the advantage that the D1 tourney is in MSP. They could get some people from that venturing over for the Saturday games to boost attendence.

I still think they should link it with the D1 tourney.

wait, you still think platts get a bye?

I didn't realize the DI tourny was out there. I don't think it would be good for the D3 game to be out there at the same time. I think the DI games would draw most of the fans.

hmmm....247 at the MIAC championship game saturday....and also average attendance is about 70 less than plattsburgh. river falls was around 200 or so average and for their last home games not so high. NCHA championship game last year at river falls vs. stevens point had 467, nearly 200 less people than plattsburgh today. At $10 per day per ticket times 2 days in the NCAA tournament, that's 200 less people than plattsburgh and $4,000 less for the NCAA if river falls hosted the frozen four instead of plattsburgh.

i don't buy people coming from the DI tourney down to watch the DIII tourney. I mean, I know we care a lot of about DIII hockey, but I can't buy the thousands for the DI tournament will come down. The other way around? sure.

I don't think Plattsburgh hosts friend.

It's going west.

The bye is a toss-up between Platty and Amherst.

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

My Final Bracket Projection

Amherst-BYE
Norwich @ Plattsburgh
Trinity @ Elmira
Wis. River Falls @ Gustavus Adolphus (winner hosts the FF)

I'm thinking a lot of D3 fans from the west will make the trip to see the Frozen Four...If i was still in Duluth/Superior...i'd be there even if UWS wasn't in it.

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

something to consider for those that still think Platts can/should host: Plattsburgh is a joint host for the D3 men's FF in Lake Placid. I have to think the NCAA would consider this. They don't want the event to be short-staffed in any way.

Plattsburgh is a Co-Host for the men's tournament in Lake Placid, but I believe that most of the "security" in Placid will be provided by ORDA. I could be wrong though.
