'09-'10 D-III Bracketology

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

The west team was the number 1 seed the rest should be irrelavant.

WHAT???? Why don't you share with all of us where it says that everything gets thrown out the window right after the #1 seed is determined and that the other 6 teams and there locations are determined by who the #1 seed ends up being.

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

To me, this means that when GAC was #1, there was no way to naturally have it in the west as they would have had to fly three teams. Which under their policy would not be "natural".

.

NO that year they flew two teams east. Plattsburgh was the overall number 1 seed in the tournament. And were 26-0-2 or something like that. They could have flown two teams west and had GAC host, but chose not too. If Platty had lost in the first round it would have been at GAC

edit
it was 05-06
Plattsburgh was 24-2-1 going into the NCAA tournament and was the #1 overall seed. Gustavus was the #2 overall seed at 22-3-2 and given the bye in the west. Stevens Point beat Superior and GAC & UWSP were flown to Plattsburgh...a west team has never been the #1 overall seed. Because even if GAC goes 25-0, they aren't as good as a 23-2 Plattsburgh team!

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

When did this happen. GAC may have been #1 in the western rankings, but not in the nation. What year are you referring to.

What year was GAC #1 in the nation prior to the tournament?
At the end of the 2005-2006 Gustavus was the number # 1 seed in the tournement and had the bye in the Quarter finals. Superior played Stevens Point with Stevens Point advancing. Plattsburg played Elmira in another Quarter final. After the Quarter Finals GAC & Stevens Point traveled to Plattsburg along with Middlebury for the finals. Why would the NCAA give the Number # 1 seed to a team that they did not have ranked # 1 in then nation. Show us all where it indicates by the NCAA system that a team other than Gustavus was number # 1 that year.

Or another way of asking the questions is why would the number # 1 ranked team have to play a Quarter Final and not get a bye?

Plattsburgh was the #1 overall seed that year, as gojackets pointed out below. And the reason they had to play in the QF's and did not get a bye was because of the split. For them to get a bye a team would have to fly. Not going to happen.

If you can find the ranking check the final ranking before the tournement for 2007-2008. I believe this was a year GAC was ranked number # 1 and did not receive the bye which would have allowed them to host. GAC lost in the Quarter Finals which made the guy living in his parents basement/above the garage very happy.

ranked where? by the NCAA or USCHO?? NCAA never releases their 1-7 rankings. GAC was 25-2, Plattsburgh was 25-3-1, Plattsburgh was #1 seed in NCAA tourney and hosted. It was controversial, but GAC showed they didn't belong anyway as they got beat by Superior in the QF's :P

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

So, when does the NCAA announce its D3 tournament invites/schedule? Tonight, with the D1 announcement?

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

I thought they announced it tonight. It shouldn't be that difficult. They really just have to decide between 2 teams.

Do I have this right?

Auto bids:

UW-RF
GAC
Amherst
Elmira
Norwich

Plattsburgh seems likely.

So, Lake Forest or Trinity is the open question?

Last year the NCAA decided it would wait until Monday morning and do a special webcast to release the field. I watched it at work. Then ironically enough the next day our IT department sent out a company wide email about streaming video was being banned on work computers because it was using up too much bandwidth and hurting normal processing.

Are you kidding????? It could take well into tomorrow to decide which Eastern team to screw over if any at all. Who gets the other pool C after Platts?

NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Committee: Garnet Asmundson, Hamline coach (chair); Steven E. Nelson, Wisconsin-Superior athletic director; Cheryl Aaron, Massachusetts-Boston assistant athletic director; Michael Letzeisen, ECAC Division III director of sport administration; Andrew McPhee, Trinity coach.
If the above is accurate, how could the coach of Trinity not vote for his own team(should he even be on the committee?) Hopefully Nelson lobbies heavily for another western team to get the other Pool C spot. hoping it's a 4-3 split:)

Last year it was broadcast on line on Monday morning from NCAA HQ. I presume the same this year. Can anyone provide a link for that? Last year someone provided that link.

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

Here is my prediction:

Elmira hosts Trinity
Norwich hosts Platty
GAC hosts UWRF
Amerst gets bye

Winner of GAC/UWRF hosts final four

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

2009-2010 NCAA Women's Division III National Tournament
Location: On-campus at highest seed

Qualifying Teams: 7

First round: March 12, 13 or 14 at a participating school
Semifinals: March 19 at a participating school
Finals: March 20 at same location as semifinals

Format: No. 1 seed gets bye, No. 7 seed plays No. 2 seed, No. 6 seed plays No. 3 seed, No. 5 seed plays No. 4 seed in first round. In semifinals, No. 1 seed plays lowest remaining seed, other two remaining seeds meet. Winners meet in NCAA final.

Automatic Qualifiers: ECAC East, ECAC West, MIAC, NCHA, NESCAC

NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Committee: Garnet Asmundson, Hamline coach (chair); Steven E. Nelson, Wisconsin-Superior athletic director; Cheryl Aaron, Massachusetts-Boston assistant athletic director; Michael Letzeisen, ECAC Division III director of sport administration; Andrew McPhee, Trinity coach.

The above is from the USCO.com web site "NCAA" Womens III. Note it indicates that the location is at the highest seed and the No.1 seed gets bye. Ok, if Amherst, Plattsburg, or Elmira gets the bye are they not the highest seed? Doesn't that then mean they get to host? So explain to me how the finals can be in the west. Or are the highest ranked teams not going to be seed based on there rankings? Has Gustavus and River Falls after this weekend now moved to the top of the rankings? Now that would **** a lot of people off out east!

The thing there is that that never happens. The #2 never plays the #7 & #3 plays #6...etc. If it did the 2 west teams most years would have to be the 4/5 seeds. In reality, they will rank 1-7 and then rerank according to region, the 4 or 5 east teams will be ranked 1-5 in the east, the 2-3 west teams will be ranked 1-3. And they will seed from there. If it is a 4-3 split, the top western seed will get the bye...regardless of their rank in the overall scheme of things. They will not fly a team in the first round in order to make the #1 overall get a bye.

From NCAA Women's handbook
Once automatic qualifiers are identified and the Pool C teams are selected, the following
guidelines should be followed:
Once selected, teams will be grouped in clusters according to natural geographical
proximity. Teams will then be paired according to geographical proximity. A team may
be moved to numerically balance the bracket if geographical proximity is maintained.
Teams should be paired and eligible sites should be selected according to geographical
proximity (within 500 miles).
• Teams may be seeded on a regional basis using the regional selection criteria. However,
geographical proximity takes precedence over seeding.
• Teams from the same conference do not have to play one another in the first round as
long as geographical proximity is maintained.
• The highest seeded team that meets all selection criteria will be selected as the host
institution, provided geographical proximity is maintained.
The committee will review the following criteria when evaluating sites for NCAA
championship competition [Bylaw 31.1.3.2.1]:
a. Quality and availability of the facility and other necessary accommodations;
b. Geographical location (including such factors as rotation of sites, weather, accessibility
and transportation costs);
c. Seeding; and
d. Attendance history and revenue potential, which shall be considered necessary to
assure fiscal responsibility.

The bold one kinda lays it out
