'09-'10 D-III Bracketology

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

So...I guess everyone gets to fight over spots on the 4 sets of bleachers with 3 rows?

and we were only allowed to sit on one side last year, remember? the other side was for students or something else.

I can just hear the announcement now.

"Ladies and gentleman, the attendance for tonight's championship game....26..."

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

I just watched it again....the host states:

"One team received the first round bye and will host the semifinals..."

.....and why shouldn't they. Why should any team who ends up being #1 get punished for a stupid "every 4 years rule". Yes I know that GA was #1 in a previous year, but until the rest of the West can build their programs like the east, it is cheaper to bring one team west. As some have been saying $$$'s talk in these hard times. No surprises...

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

Kind of off topic but not really.... Is this the first time that Middlebury has failed to make it to the NCAA tourney? Might not be the first time ever but you get my point.
Surprises me a little bit.

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

Yes they did, Amherst received a bye and is hosting the Semifinals, sounded a lot like the finals are in the east again. So much for the recommendation to have it in the west once every four years.

For all of you out there that said it would be out west for sure and that I did not know what I was talking about, BITE ME!

Say What??? From the NC$$ press release.

Three first-round games will be played at campus sites March 12, 13 or 14. Dates and times for these games will be announced Monday. The four remaining teams will play in the semifinals March 19 on the campus of the winner of the game between Gustavus Adolphus and Wisconsin-River Falls. The finals and third-place game will be held March 20. The semifinals, third-place game and finals will be available for broadband viewing online. Go to www.ncaa.com for more information.

Doesn’t that mean It is going west. Bite Who???

That makes sense to me. It jives with everything I heard over the weekend from people I trust to know...

NCAA RELEASE

The NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Committee has announced the seven teams selected for the 2010 NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Championship. Of the seven teams selected, five of the teams received automatic qualification berths as winners of their conference championship. Two institutions were selected from Pool C, which consists of institutions from automatic-qualifying conferences that were not the conference champion.

Conferences and teams receiving automatic qualification:

ECAC DIII Women's East Hockey League: Norwich University
ECAC DIII Women's West Hockey League: Elmira College
Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference: Gustavus Adolphus College
New England Small College Athletic Conference: Amherst College
Northern Collegiate Hockey Association: University of Wisconsin, River Falls

The two at-large selections are Plattsburgh State University of New York and Trinity College (Connecticut).

Highlights of the NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Championship will be shown on CBS at 1 p.m. Eastern time, Saturday, May 1. "CBS Sports Presents Championships of the NCAA"

will feature highlights of 17 different NCAA championships, each taking place during the winter season.

In 2009, Amherst women's ice hockey team won its first ever national title in overtime. Amherst was tied 3-3 with Elmira after regulation, and junior all-American Kate Dennett scored the winning goal in the overtime period. Only three institutions (Elmira, Middlebury College and Plattsburgh State) had won the NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Championship title prior to Amherst, and the Lord Jeffs defeated all three to win the title.

Well what is it? What they said on the telecast or what they printed in the news release???

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

By referring to Amherst getting a bye and hosting a semifinal game, did they mean Amherst is the home team away from home at the opponents rink either in Minnesota or Wisconsin? Very tricky.

Well just call me Gomer....surprise, surprise, surprise....the NCAA came through for the West after all, after reading the NCAA release. Hey good for them for sticking to their word, and not let $$$$ come in the way. It will cost them a good chunk of change to bring teams West, but the West cannot cry foul anymore.

Time for me to eat crow, but Gomer liked crow deep fried. Good luck to everyone over the next two weekends, and now that it is going West, let's hope that the host does not come in 4th, or the banter of East over West will surge even more.

Now is the time for GoJackets and Nbound to start explaining that, even with the West hosting, the deck is stacked because the East will have 3 of the 4 teams.

Yes, the West cannot cry foul -- because it is, again, a 5/2 split and there will only be 1 Western team guaranteed in the semi-final tournament. Wow, that is a lot different than if the tournament were held out in the East. While I'm not sure if LF deserved the spot or not, it's still pretty hard to believe they took a 4th place Eastern seed over a 1st place Western seed when the tournament is in the West. I thought hosting it in your region gave you at least a little bit of leverage. But I guess that's only when it's out East that the NCAA can use that excuse.

REGARDLESS -- Good luck to all the teams in the next two weekends.

The problem with the toss-up between LF and Trinity, with an Eastern team getting the bye, was that if LF is in, they have to fly someone somewhere to play in the first round. I didn't think that was going to happen, so I think that all other things being equal, Trinity is in, and no one has to fly first round.

Brackets are up, too.

RF vs. GAC winner to play Amherst at home and host semis & finals.

This is the only division of NCAA hockey where the #1 seed hosts the tourney. Clearly its going west as it should.

Get over yourself with the west building programs...the west is just as good as the east. Hopefully, Gustavus/River Falls can prove that this year...if not...you can keep going on and on about it...even though you will still be wrong.

It looks like they got the right field in and didn't take money into consideration, which is good. I would have liked to see 2 west teams in the FF.

You are right, they did not deserve a spot. It seems apparent that the 4th place Eastern team is stronger that LF, so they made the choice based on talent, and not with a host team that is not good enough to legitimately host the tournament, but who gets it based upon a rule that states it should be out West every 4 years.

As to 3 east teams versus 1 west team, if the West team cannot muster a win on home ice there is NO excuse.

I didn't think you were that smart to see that on your own:D . Glad the NC$$ held up to their word of having it out West. But, if they really weren't concerned about the $$$$$ They'ld have GAC and UWRF facing Eastern teams in the first round (they could arrange the brackets however they wanted to make it happen). Then we could have more East/West comparisons. Heck, then they they could have the finals out West with no Western teams involved and we could see how real hockey is played:D  :D

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

Ha, what a mess.

I heard it -- the telecast said Amherst will host the semi-final, but the press release said the winner of GAC/WRF will host the semi-finals. Hmmm, as of last night, DI was able to get its act together, but even with an extra day, the DIII geniuses cannot get it straight.

If they play the semis and finals out west this year as the press release says they will, it will represent an ironic display of cosmic justice. In at least one year of the past, maybe 2, the DIII folks could have reasonably argued that GA deserved the #1 seed and to host. If nothing else they could have argued GA had a record that was certainly close enough to being the #1 seed that with costs also a consideration, they would so designate. If I recall, at least one time they could have reasonable put STC or the NCHA runner-up as one of the pool bids. If they had done so, they then could have played out west and had to fly only 2 teams, rather than 3, as they will this year, if the press release is correct.

So now Amherst, which I believe virtually everyone agrees deserves the #1 seed this year, and the east feels cheated because this 4-year rules robs them of their right to host AND the NCAA has to spend more money, not less.

You gotta love it!

I don't think the East/West debate hinges on whether the GAC/RF survivor wins it all. I think that in every year, the top 2 teams in the West are good enough to play with the top Eastern teams, although last year RF needed a great game from Campbell just to hang with Elmira. I think the difference is depth. I think Manhattanville, RIT, and Midd give the East eight really strong teams that could go toe to toe with the GAC/RF winner. And don't forget Bowdoin hung 40-something shots on LF the day after LF got rid of their bus legs.

Re: '09-'10 D-III Bracketology

By referring to Amherst getting a bye and hosting a semifinal game, did they mean Amherst is the home team away from home at the opponents rink either in Minnesota or Wisconsin? Very tricky.

"Being the "hosting" team is not the same thing as being the "home" team. If the press release is correct, either GA or WRF will be the "hosting" team for the semi-finals but, according to the seeding, Amherst will be the "home" team when they play either GA or WRF.

Thus, if the NCAA used the term "hosting" team in the telecast to imply "home" team they (surprise, surprise) were being intentionally deceitful and misleading. I cannot see any rational reason why they would want to do that in this case (not that they would not be deceitful, if it served their purposes, but that I cannot see what purpose it would serve for them, in this case), so I think it simply may have been a screw-up in terminology when the script was written.

Actually, it seems to work out ok, although I don't know what the facilities are @ GAC or RF ... the concerns about hosting anything more than a public skate @ Orr are well founded. Maybe this will drive Amherst to upgrade their hockey facilities, for the first time in 50 years?
