World Soccer XXXI: Golden Generation?

Brazil and Costa Rica tie 0-0.

There might actually be a reason for the USMNT to try to win their group.

For those curious, CONMEBOL posts videos of VAR decisions on their website.

Also, since the referee decision announcements are being made in Spanish here’s a quick guide from someone who doesn’t speak Spanish but at least knows the important phrases:

Goal/No Goal is the same though it’s spelled gol.

Offside is fuera de juego.

Foul is falta.

Handball is infraccion por mano.

Red card is tarjeta roja.

Penalty kick is penal.

Free kick is tiro libre.

Alex Morgan left off USWNT Olympic roster.

The last of the superstars is gone. I’m sure NBC is thrilled.

On the other hand, nice to see a coach have the balls to leave an elder behind and get the youth some experience. Something that has plagued that team for ages
Yeah, finally. Morgan has zero goals this season in the NWSL and should be nowhere near the roster. If there was any doubt about Hayes having full control of the roster, this should put those to rest.

I'm sure the Twitter stans are up in arms though.

And it's not like the average American remembers any of them. The $$$ is in the "USA" derp, and only if they win. Just pick whoever can win.

Georgia is playing the role of little sibling and just annoying the hell out of Portugal after getting a goal 90 seconds into the match...

It's been a fun watch since Georgia is fighting for their lives and Portugal is coasting on 6 points in the bank.

It’s never worked like that for the USWNT. They’ve always had to have the marketable stars to get anywhere in the media landscape. Someone that Nike can plaster all over ads at whatever soccer camp or tournament young girls are congregating at to make them think “this could be you!” People don’t really remember that the USWNT won, but they do remember Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy, Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan, and Megan Rapinoe. Heck, I bet most of the American public thinks three of those names still play.

Forget Czech/Turk. The ref was the story of that match.
That was… something.

There are matches as a referee where you give a ton of cards simply because you get two teams that just want to kick the crap out of each other. Then there are matches where you give a ton of cards because you did or didn’t do something early and everything went wrong.

Feels like the latter here, even though the red card was definitely correct.

Mexico loses to Venezuela 1-0. Let's all laugh at Mexico:

I think it is exactly the opposite for the 90% of Americans who do not follow soccer, or follow more casually than you. Without a prompt I literally could only have named Rapinoe. Even with the names in front of me I have zero memory of Foudy or Morgan. For the USMNT, right now, I can only name Pulisic.

We keep forgetting it is a vanishingly small demographic still in the American consciousness. And yet everyone remembers the women won.
