JFC Fox's soccer coverage frustrates me so much. DOCTOR JOE WAS NEVER A REFEREE IN ANY CAPACITY WHY DO EMPLOY HIM AS A RULES EXPERT? Alexi Lalas may be a colossal dumb fuck but even he as an actual, basic grassroots referee is more qualified than your "expert". Machnik either adds absolutely nothing to the situation or is just factually wrong.

We should know the last three teams in the Gold Cup by the end of day. Last three qualifiers are tonight:

Haiti vs Bermuda (winner plays the US in Group B)
Guatemala vs Guadeloupe (winner plays Costa Rica in Group C)
Trinidad and Tobago vs French Guiana (winner plays Mexico in Group A)

French Guiana advanced after Cuba couldn’t get their Visas taken care of and had to forfeit. Cuba blames the US Government, naturally, though many have pointed out their Baseball team had no trouble getting Visas back in March.

From what I understand, CONCACAF is using VAR in these matches too.

Trinidad had to go 8 rounds of PKs to advance. Field is already in peak Concacaf form with two more games to go today. Dirt patches and players slipping everywhere.

This Argentina v Colombia game is quintessential CONMEBOL. 30+ fouls, tons of cards, inexplicable ref decisions, crazy missed chances, star players being running highlight reels, and it will probably end in kicks.

Argentina no longer Messi and 10 other dudes.

It's now Messi, a pretty good goalkeeper and 9 other dudes.

I've always found it curious with how "rough" South American football can be compared to European football. Especially since many of the top players are based in Europe. You'd think that playing over there would help mellow things out, but it doesn't seem to do anything. I wonder if there is some resentment towards players like Messi for leaving (think blue collar vs white collar).

That may be part of it but, it’s a lot to do with tactics (think “hack-a-Shaq”, Messi can’t be Messi if you hack him down at midfield) and officiating (persistent infringement is a caution but almost never used because of TPTB not wanting too many cautions).

I was surprised to see Denmark has won the Euros before.
Yeah, 1992. One of the craziest stories in soccer. They didn’t even qualify, they only played because UN Sanctions against Yugoslavia forced Yugoslavia out and Denmark replaced them.
