World Soccer XXX: We Have Men Too!

I've noted elsewhere that a small devilish part of me hopes to see England make the final only to lose by either another Hand of God goal or in PKs.
No, quarterfinals and lose to a “minnow” is always the sweet spot of England losing. It’s enough time for their press to build everyone up to “THEY’RE GONNA RULE ALL” and not go far enough they can go all “BRAVE LIONS FIGHT”.

So Gold Cup rosters got released today. The US is the veritable “Who’s Not” we thought it would be, but Mexico is bringing essentially their A-Team. A huge risk by Tata Martino (in that he gains little by winning but is likely to be fired for losing) but one he may have been forced into by the FMF after losing to the US at the Nations League Final.

Got me thinking, what are the worst National Team jobs out there? Mexico has to be top 3.

1. USWNT. You have to win every game or you’re fired, you have no choice in player selection (thanks to the CBA), and, even if you do win, you can’t parlay that success into something better.

2. England. You’ll be expected to win, hounded by the press and fans over every minute detail, and likely have a player pool that’s nowhere close to being capable of winning.

3. Mexico. Same as England, but with corruption and CONCACAF.

Gotta think England is the worst, though teams like Colombia you are probably always caught in a vise between ultras and drug runners. I wouldn't be surprised if South American, African, and Eastern European coaches had been murdered.

I don’t think anyone has been murdered, threatened undoubtedly, but not murdered.

The South American, African, and Eastern European countries at least have realistic expectations. They’re not expecting you to beat a Top 5 team like 5-0 like the English press will.

The Colombian drug lords may be sadistic and crazy but even they know Messi is probably good for a goal or two.

The FMF, Mexico’s soccer Federation, has an ingenious plan to avoid having to play World Cup Qualifying matches with no fans:

Make the Women serve the suspension

According to a report published this morning by CANCHA, FMF President Yon de Luisa “asked to know if el Tricolor Femenil could come to the rescue and play the next two games without fans, imposed as punishment because of el grito hom?fobo.”

M?xico’s Senior Women’s National Team hasn’t played in front of fans in M?xico since June 10, 2017

If they start banning teams for having racist and homophobic fans the USMNT might qualify this time.

Just don't play any games in the red states. Or rural locations in the blue states.

I'm sure it'll be on full display in both November and March as well. This is exactly like telling a student section to knock off something that has become engrained and routine. It's gonna take time unless we see a nuclear option used.

But even then, it comes from the culture. Russian soccer fans aren't throwing bananas at soccer players because it's part of their soccer culture but because they make 1850s America look like a Unitarian brunch.

The only way to have a Russian soccer game with no racists is to have no Russians.

The Gold Cup is going to be an absolute s-show, coupled with the Nations League mess I could see Mexico having no fans for the entirety of Qualifying.

The more interesting, and better, punishment IMO would be to ban them from playing friendlies in the US.

Yeah, but isn't that money that would otherwise be going to USSF? They should be punished by *only* being allowed to play friendlies in the US until they stop using that chant at said friendlies....
No, the USSF gets a cut because of sanctioning fees but most of it goes to the FMF and SUM (who does the marketing for Mexico in the US).
