World Soccer XXX: We Have Men Too!

Isn't Bruce Arena like 100 now?

(Thinks about Buck Showalter. Edges towards door.)
Just looked, he's 70. Cornell grad too.

New England was, without a doubt, the only place that would hire him.

The more time that ticks by, the more obvious it becomes he was carried his entire career by Etcheverry (at DC) and Donovan (at LA and the USMNT).

I was being kind of flippant about Arena being carried by players his coaching career but, looking at things closer, he really was.

1996-98 DC United: Basically gets gifted the best team through allocations with Etcheverry, Diaz Arce, Moreno (later on), plus Agoos, Harkes, and Eddie Pope. JFC almost any coach could’ve won with a lineup like that.

USMNT 1998-2006: He gets some of the greatest talent in USMNT history all in their prime: McBride, Reyna, the one time where John O’Brian was actually healthy, Donovan, Beasley, and a stand-on-head performance from Friedel plus a lucky draw against Mexico (it should’ve been Italy) to get the quarterfinals in 2002. McBride, Reyna, and Donovan all play like crap, he doesn’t play Dempsey and the US gets bounced in 2006.

LA Galaxy 2008-2016: He gets gifted a team with David Beckham, Landon Donovan, and Robbie Keane plus being able to draft Omar Gonzalez. Again, he gets handed the best roster in the league (while his closest competition were getting gutted by the expansion drafts) and gets to coach on easy mode. Donovan retires in 2014 and, shockingly, the Galaxy suck again.

When he didn’t have all the talent he was terrible. See his New York Red Bulls stint (less than two seasons, had a .500 record) or his infamous second USMNT stint (failed to qualify).

Caught the 2nd half on replay "real early" this morning and when Lletget sailed his 'shot from the spot' over the net like a Folk field goal they caught Arena on camera: https://twitter.com/MattDoyle76/stat...11580120469511

Pumas wanted it more. ;^);)
Arena played every one of his big offseason signings: Lletget, Omar Gonzalez, Altidore.

Really worked out for him.

Sad part is, Kraft won’t even care by his rub n’ tug this morning.

In a place like Seattle or Toronto he wouldn’t even be allowed on the plane.

On a non-Bruce Arena bashing note:

Ukranian referee to referee in Italy now.

Italy opens its doors to referee Kateryna Monzul and on Sunday she will be on the pitch to referee the women's Serie A match Inter-Sampdoria. Italian football is united against the war and continues its relentless activity in favor of the Ukrainian population and its Federation by welcoming one of the best female referees in Europe to Italy. Like Stephanie Frappart, Monzul has already refereed several Europa League matches and other major competitions, both men and women. She will now be able to continue her refereeing activity in Italy. The synergy between UEFA, FIGC and AIA created the conditions to allow Monzul to continue her career, leaving behind the logistical difficulties caused by the conflict but, certainly, not the pain and suffering. Her debut in Italy is expected in the women’s Serie A and then evaluating the possibility of any further appointments.

Huh. Had no idea.

Dammit, Jim. Now I have to cross that off the list of things I know that Kepler doesn’t.

Pretty stunning, considering Arena’s lacrosse accomplishments as well. His first D-1 coaching job was as a Cornell assistant lax coach, from where he went on to become head coach of both lax and soccer at UVA for many seasons before focusing solely on soccer.

Bonus: Arena was pressed into service as a third-string soccer goalie for the 1972 NCAA tournament, where he led Cornell to its only semifinal appearance.

I'm sorry, I'd have figured he would know that.

I knew about the lacrosse stuff, it explains a lot about his attitude.

After last night, the attitudes of various fanbases going into tonight's Seattle-Leon match with Seattle also having a 3-0 lead:

LigaMX fans: LOL Leon is going to smash Seattle the same way, 4-0 cabron!

MLS fans: We can't have nice things, Seattle is totally going to blow it.

Sounders: Yeah, we're gonna defend and counter, score a goal and go up 4-0 on aggregate at halftime.

Seattle and Leon draw 1-1, Seattle advances 4-1.

Just night and day the difference between Seattle and New England.

Thoughts JJ?

Reyna, Pefok, Horvath back with USMNT for final World Cup qualifiers
Reyna back is good news but I doubt he starts.

Pefok has been scoring goals at Young Boys (yes that is the actual name of his club) so hopefully that carries over.

Horvath is actually playing again after spending months on the bench (still a terrible career move, dude needs a new agent).

Hopefully we get Champions League Pulisic.

Dest was injured literally hours before the announcement and may need to be replaced.

Russia's request to freeze a FIFA ban on its football teams ahead of next week's World Cup qualifying playoffs was dismissed on Friday.

FIFA said the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed the Russian soccer federation's bid for an urgent interim ruling to freeze the ban pending a full appeal.

The CAS decision means Russia will not be able to play Poland in World Cup qualifying on Thursday.

The ruling follows a similar CAS refusal on Tuesday to freeze UEFA's ban on Russian national and club teams in European football.

Russian athletes have been banned from competing in multiple sports because of the country's invasion of Ukraine. Belarusian athletes have also been banned because their country has been an ally of Russia.

I don't know how I feel about banning athletes from competing because their leader is a criminal. It's one thing if the team was caught doping, cheating, etc. But for what gains, to what end, at what cost to people that have nothing to do with Putin's decision making?

Are you OK with sanctions which hurt common people because of their leaders?

Innocent people get hurt. An athlete not being able to compete is at about a 0.2 on a 100-point human tragedy scale.

They should ban UAE, Belarus, Iran, and the Norks, too.
