Cindy Parlow Cone elected President of US Soccer over “guy who resigned in disgrace” Carlos Cordeiro in a vote that was a) probably closer than it should’ve been (52.9 to 47.1) and b) is a pretty good indication of how unwieldy and disparate the whole of the USSF actually is.

Loons game delayed due to nearby lightning strikes. On March 5th. When it is sleeting. At 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

It is not for enjoying. It is for suffering.

17 people have died after a riot at a Queretaro v Atlas game in Mexico. There may even be more.

Sounds like two ultras groups got into it and Queretaro had little security on hand (like only four officers).

Atlas, it should be noted, are the defending champions from the Apertura.

Liga MX play has been suspended. Honestly, don’t go searching the videos, they’re pretty bad. I think the death count is going to go up.

The USMNT is supposed to travel to Mexico in 19 days.

In the more immediate future there’s CONCACAF Champions League matches this week Tuesday and Wednesday, with Seattle hosting Leon, New England hosting Pumas, and Montreal is supposed to travel to the Azteca to play Cruz Azul. So now that’s up in the air.

I’m surprised this is not a bigger story. It’s technically the most popular league in the US, although that’s nearly entirely Spanish language, so the cultural/language barrier explains that.

Still, if this happened in MLS, or any of the top Euro games, or even a minor league baseball game, it would be the top news story.

Officially there aren't any deaths reported yet. 22 injured, 2 critically is the official report.
Reading through various sources there may be some government interference involved. Apparently, if someone dies at the stadium, then by law the owners face criminal liability for the deaths. But if they die on the way to hospital…

No one really believes the “no deaths” story, there’s plenty of video evidence to the contrary.

In the more immediate future, I don’t see how the CONCACAF Champions League matches can go ahead on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I doubt it’ll happen but, Mexico needs the boot for a year or two. It’s the only way to get the FMF to ever make an effort to get their fan problems under control.

So they permanently play "home" matches in the USA... That's what will happen...

Was there anything they could have done? Do they not search for weapons on entry? Honest question, not (as typical) starting something.

Judging by reports and the video, security was almost non-existent in a stadium known for having trouble. Most of Mexico is calling for Queretaro to be booted out of Liga MX and are PO'd at Liga MX for allowing Queretaro to have this match without proper security.

I read a couple days ago that the Russia-Poland match isn’t technically canceled, but merely postponed. It wasn’t clear if FIFA is attempting to wait out the war or if it has to do with Russia’s appeal, but either way they’re not officially out of the World Cup yet.

I say assign a Ukrainian referee to that game...

Not true.

Scotland v Ukraine postponed to June, Poland given a bye to Path B final.

Seattle did end up playing Leon tonight in the CCL and won 3-0. I honestly wonder if Leon was still a bit shell shocked from this weekend, they looked off. Seattle hasn’t even scored in MLS and has their top two forwards out injured yet Leon was lucky to only give up three.

Montreal travels to the Azteca tomorrow where there’ll be no fans while New England hosts Pumas. Be interesting to see how those two matches go.

(NYCFC is playing Communicaciones from Guatemala in the other quarterfinal)
