World Soccer XXX: We Have Men Too!

I just wanted to come in here and give a hearty congratulations to the Clemson Men's Soccer team on winning the national championship this afternoon. They probably should have won it one of the last two years, but as so often happens, the "lesser" group was able to persevere through the NCAA Tournament and capture the program's third national title. Go Tigers!
Hats off to them, they played great while UW looked terrible from the beginning.

The Knicks' ball wasn't cold enough.
From reading the news, it’s sounds like the opposite was the problem (Manchester United was originally drawn against Villareal, a team they played in the group stage and thus couldn’t be matched up against).

I know, I was being funny, just not very well.

Love them throwing the software vendor under the bus. Yes. That was the problem. Not user error.

At the rate things are going, I strongly suspect the USMNT may be without any of the Euro based players for World Cup Qualifying in January.

At the rate things are going I strongly suspect it will be moot.
The World Cup is happening next year no matter what and qualifying will continue no matter what. If CONCACAF and CONMEBOL teams have to use only domestic based players then so be it. No way FIFA allows this to stop.

Say that happens - are any of the top teams in either group at risk if they're limited to using only domestic players? It's not as if the US has rolled through Q even with having the majority of their Euors for every match so far. Surely that impacts Mexico and Canada as well but the countries right behind in points likely don't send as many players to Europe.

Of the CONCACAF teams, the US would definitely be hurting but would be ok all things considered.

Canada would become a decidedly average team considering all their offensive talent (David, Davies, Larin etc.) all play in Europe. They likely would be the most affected.

Mexico would be fine, they never really have players in Europe outside of a few.

Jamaica would be absolutely fucked, a lot of their talent plays in England.

Costa Rica would be hurting without Navas.

Everyone else wouldn’t see much difference.

FIFA President: The World Cup can be held every two years, and so can the Euros!

This is going under the radar but the “World Cup every two years” may well be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. UEFA, CONMEBOL, and the other big nations (including the US and Mexico) do not want it, the clubs especially do not want it, and the players really don’t want it.

But it’s definitely going to pass because it’s being put to a vote to the entirety of FIFA and the Asian, African, and other smaller countries will vote for it because money.

I have no idea what will happen after the vote, but it’ll be interesting.

Historically, why didn't the rich countries sabotage FIFA the way they sabotaged the UN? Why isn't there a FIFA Security Council to make sure UEFA and CONMEBOL always get their way?

There was, the Executive Committee. They just got horribly corrupt, then opportunists like Blatter took advantage to change things for their own benefit.

Ah. That makes sense. Thanks.

I knew the answer to why FIFA would not be ideally configured for one form of corruption would be another form of corruption.

So the UN model fits there, too.

Do you ever get the impression the English and German worlds are the only place people actually ever gave a F about corruption, in all of human history? Like we are the ones who are really strange and everybody else is just sitting comfortably in hammocks sipping a nice drink and wondering what's up our butts, like the killjoy at the holiday party who wants to count the silverware?

Yeah, look up the history of Stanley Rous and Joao Havelange.

Good ol’ fashioned European racism leads to an opportunistic South American fleecing the rubes.
