Here's a video of Huseklepp's goal for Pompey yesterday. Beautiful volley!

The Villa throws away points on an injury-time own goal conceded to a 10-man QPR. This is why we can't have nice things.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

I'd thought I had heard it all from David Moyes until he accused Vincent Kompany of trying to injure Cahill. I believe it was Cahill that went in studs up and 2 footed and try to injure Kompany. It was also Moyes who told his players to "Do a job" on Silva.

Anyone else catch this?

Richard Dunne...as great as he was for City...I still have nightmares of the own goals and red cards!!!

Graham Poll called for a 3 match ban for Kompany in his column today. I don't see it all.

That is ridiculous. Sounds like the City hate squad is in full swing again. Had Kompany not reacted as he did...he leg would have been snapped. Where are the calls for Moyes to face a ban for having his players intentionally try to injure City players? Its not a red card when you land on someone trying to injure you. Cahill is one of the dirtiest players in the League...his own fault he got hurt!

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

This is my problem with the EPL. Every week I watch the highlights and I continuously see weak penalties given and harsh red cards handed out. Even the Torres one. He made zero contact with the Swansea player.

The red card given to the Bolton player was also very, very weak.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

also forgot the penalty awarded to Villa

Whoa. Are you saying you didn't think Torres deserved red? That one was a no-doubter.

Even John Terry, who *****es about everything, had nothing to say about it. You can't dive in with two feet like that and get away with it.

Yeah, I pulled the card faster than the ref. Loved the announcers commentary on it " a chicken tackle". That the guy's leg didn't get snapped in half was the difference between hitting where he did and about half an inch to the right.

And the pk in the villa game was understandable when you saw the replay from the ref's angle, it looked worse from behind than it did from the side...but it was still a grab of the jersey from behind in the box on a guy in the middle of taking a makeable shot.

Umm that's exactly what I said. He didn't make ANY contact with the opponent. In my opinion, that will never be worthy of being kicked out of a game.

Not having seen the tackle but I hypothesize its similar to throwing a punch and missing, i.e. Doing something dangerous even though missed.

In MLS news, Seattle beat Vancouver to take the Cascadia Cup, hilarious moment to see the Timbers Army having to hand it over to Seattle. LA has a 7 point lead on Seattle with 4 games left, meaning LA nearly has the Supporters Shield in hand. That basically means the domestic treble goes unclaimed once again (barring an epic LA collapse and an epic run by Seattle).

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Red Bulls finally win, aided by a questionable (at best) handball call in the second half. Although there was actually a handball about 3 seconds earlier that wasn't called, so I'm sure Timbers fans will forget that one. Defense looked much stronger without Rafa, I think most likely that he's going to be riding the pine for the time being. When paired next to Ream, Keel looks very good. He doesn't have to handle the ball out of the back all that much and he marks defenders well. The crap I gave him during the Gold Cup absentee games was a little harsh. Mendes and he aren't a good centerback pairing but they play better with Ream around.
"Finally" is a bit of a misnomer since they also won last weekend, 1-0 in Dallas. I think DC (sucks) will pass them for that last playoff spot though; two games in hand are as huge as Frank Lampard.

I was just surprised because like I said, I had seen very very little dissent regarding the tackle, even from the Chelsea bunch, who are usually a pretty group pretty quick to dissent.

Your interpretation of the rules would force referees to base their decisions on the degree to which the opposing player gets out of the way of a foul. That's nuts. What Torres did could have legitimately broken the guy's leg. Just because he was able to partially get out of the way means it isn't a red? I think the throwing a punch example is apt as well.

I also don't think it's accurate to say there was no contact. I think he caught him on the shin, as shown at 1:05 here.

Right, but throwing a punch isn't even part of the game. Making tackles on guys with the ball is. I think that's a big difference that has to be taken into consideration.

I saw some Chelsea players immediately complain after it happened. This all goes back to me having a higher standard for penalties and cards, specifically red cards. I just think they're given out too easily. That being said, obviously a very dangerous challenge from Torres. Even at that 1:05 mark, I don't see the opponent's leg move one bit after "contact". I think what I'm getting at here is if I had my way, that would be a yellow card, especially if the player had played a clean game leading up to it.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

I think it's the intent is what got Torres busted. It's like the point that Jimj made about missing a punch. If you do it, you should get booted.
