Wikipedia says Swansea is the first Welsh club ever to play in the Premier League. How is that even possible?

Because it started in 1992. And England has more money. And FIFA lets the Welsh clubs go get it.

Saw parts of Fulham-Aston Villa today... I make it a point not to watch much international club soccer (my reasons why won't win any fans here) but you can certainly sense a fluidity that you don't really see in national team soccer... so I can see the appeal... that and the bandbox-ishness of Fulham's stadium reminds me of college rinks... just don't sign me up on the bandwagon just yet though.

FFC didn't look very good for a team that's played together as often as they have and their kits are horrendous.

Oh, you can't dangle that out there and not deliver on the details... go for it.

If it helps, I'm going to flat out admit that there are times that I sense a little bit of a poser-ish quality to some of the Euro-soccer fanboys. It's one of the reasons that I remain more or less unaffiliated to this day.

An Arsenal player (Gervinho) gets grabbed by a Newcastle player (Barton), grabbed him by the shirt, yanked to his feet by him, yapped at, and then Gervinho gives a minimal push to the face. Result is a red card for Gervinho and a yellow for Barton. Same old same old. Glad I'm not following this stuff as intensely as I used to.

Oh, and at least the Fabregas saga is finally over. Not that Wenger will likely spend any of it. This could be the year Arsenal falls out of the top four, as they keep making a mint in the transfer market selling, but you can't do that forever and compete with the Red Devils, Chelski, and City.

I wasn't too impressed, but Villa are a lot better than the teams they've played thus far (and IMO better than people think they're going to be despite the guys they lost; there's still a lot of talent on their roster). But I brought my girlfriend to the bar to watch with my crew for the first time, and if that isn't a jinx then I don't know what is.

How do you reconcile this with the fact that Wolves are exactly the sort of ankle-hacking thugs you (quite rightly) decry whenever they play Arsenal?

If you don't like ankle-hacking thugs, your choice of teams in England is quite limited. Wolves have had some of those but also have had some good skill players. Plus of course, how we become fans of various teams, especially overseas, is rather random and not necessarily logically consistent. When I started rooting for Wolves, they were nowhere near the Premiership.

I'm generally against bandwagoning/glomming onto teams which you have no relation to in a country that you may never visit. I don't see a reason to make adopting a team the thing to do. I do find some of interesting and some teams more interesting than others but its always interesting that the interest tends to be for the superstar clubs, etc.

That's my take on it at least.

A convenient omission of Song's stamp on Barton earlier in the match.
