Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

WWM...

Essentially he was saying we should have been happy living in United's shadow and living without the hope of winning anything in our lifetime.
Yes, that's exactly what I was saying.

Do you really not understand that there's a difference "let's spend some money to give ourselves a chance of winning trophies" and "let's spend twice as much money as everyone else so we can buy any player we want"?

So who would you have bought if you were in charge of City in 2008? Who would you not have bought? I'm honestly curious, because I think when you look at it, there actually isn't all that big a gap between the two options you listed. In order to attract players to a club that, once again, was not in terribly good shape compared to other European clubs, wages were going to have to be pretty massively increased. In order to build a team capable of winning trophies, a massive amount of money was going to have be spent in a condensed period of time. Let's see your alternatives.

Also, aren't you a Barcelona fan? (At least I think I remember that, maybe I'm confused). How does that square with your argument?

The answer to your question apparently is no.

He's a Fulham fan. That's mainly who he talks about around here. Don't know if Barca is a side hobby of his or not.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Swansea 3-1 Bolton
Sunderland 2-2 Aston Villa
Man City 3-1 Wolves
Norwich 3-3 Blackburn
Wigan 0-2 Fulham
Chelsea 3-5 Arsenal
Everton 0-1 Salford United

The Arsenal match was insane!!! Weird refereeing decisions and utter chaos in the last 20 minutes. Also, John Terry...Where do you start with that one???

City displayed how to close out a match down a man. Very impressed with the way Wolves fought. I felt they deserved something out of the match.

MLS Playoffs tonight...

Colorado Rapids defend the cup against Sporting KC....

COME ON RAPIDS!!!

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Thanks, LA. Only one more game to go until the Red Bull Menace is out of the playoffs.

Barca is his other team. So yes, I can understand where WeWantMore is coming from, considering JMH's other team just spent 30+ million on Cesc, a player that they didn't even need but bought simply because they could.

Do I like what Al Citeh is doing? Not really. But all of the teams are guilty of it, right? Fulham fans thinks Liverpool spends a lot. QPR fans think Fulham spends a lot. Charlton fans think beer league teams spend too much.

One thing everyone is failing to point out is when you have a consistent loser, how do you convince the Kun Aguero's of the world to show up and play for your side? You spend more. The player has to accept terms to accept a transfer and really the thing that is missed the most by the casual fan is that the transfer fee is not the biggest cost. It's wages.

I mean you see the same thing in American sports. Carlos Beltran signed with the Mets because they gave him the most money, it was widely assumed that Beltran would have gone to the Yankees (and taken less) if they have given him the full NTC he wanted. The Mets had to over-pay because they weren't as respected as the Yankees. These players go to ManCity to get paid astronomical wages. If City turns this money spent into trophies, then they will end up having less of these ridiculous transfers because players want to play for winners. Barring the desire to be winners, they want to have gold plated Ferraris. Can you blame them? They're pretty.

There's a lot of ridiculous stuff going on. Man City has to over-pay right now, but hopefully won't wreck the market in the process.

Now all that's left is for Seattle to pull off the second greatest playoff comeback ever. Thankfully Olave and Borchers are hurt and Rosales may be back.

So there's this red and black rose-like icon that I keep seeIng in the Premier League review show. In the center of Chelsea's jerseys, on the lapel of Swansea' s manager, several other spots. What's the deal?

Its a poppy...the symbol of remembrance day. Its worn during a period until the 11th of November.

Comparing the lopsidedness of MLB to with City is doing in the EPL isn't a feather in City's cap.

Crazy win for Arsenal. Who'd have thought with all their problems recently the'd become the first team to every score five on Chelski at Stamford Bridge in the EPL?

Would have been nice to see Colorado win, but it wasn't to be.

With Toledo refereeing that match....The Rapids were screwed from kickoff. He allowed KC do hack the hell out of the Rapids

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

QPR fans think Fulham spends a lot.
No, QPR fans think Fulham are small - did you see all the money they were throwing around this summer on SWP and Barton (free transfer but big salary) and Anton Ferdinand and Traore and DJ Campbell?

Which isn't to say that your broader point isn't valid of course. Unless you're City, there will always be someone who thinks you spend a lot, and someone you think spends a lot.

As was noted above, Fulham are my first team and Barca are second - and I picked them essentially because I wanted to be a frontrunner for a change (being a Mets and Rangers and Fulham and Red Bull fan, I don't see my teams win a whole lot of hardware). I think it's worth noting, though, that while they do spend a lot of money in the transfer market, they also seem to me to have one of the best track records among big clubs of developing their own talent, especially if you compare them to Madrid (who haven't brought anybody notable through their ranks since, what, Casillas over ten years ago?).

For the record...and this is proven by my association with the bluewatchmcfc.co.uk website as a site admin, I was a City fan LONG BEFORE the takeover. We started BW in 2006.

I never said otherwise, my thing about being a frontrunner wasn't a shot at you.
