First American (and second MLS team) to beat a Mexican team in the CONCACAF Champions League.

The Crew's next matches are on the road but 4 points might give them Group win and the all important "avoidance of a Mexican team" in the quarters.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

And Toronto FC pulls out a 0-0 tie in Mexico against Cruz Azul. Cruz Azul got an ejection to boot! TFC must be throwing around some cash at CONCACAF or something...

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I'm not disappointed... with Spurs being able to field an entire lineup of injured players, they were never going to be able to field a full second team squad. They were about 4 deep on the depth chart in places.

You're a Spurs fan? A real Spurs fan would always be disappointed to lose to Arsenal, especially at White Hart Lane, and in extra time. This is the North London Derby we're talking about. Admittedly it's Carling Cup and both sides were missing many of their top players. But, I know as an Arsenal fan, I always hate seeing them lose to Spurs, regardless of the venue.

Interesting read:

http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/news/_/id/5580467/european-football-eating-itself

Doesn't necessarily address the difference between "good debt" and good ol' fashioned "stupid debt", but it raises some valid questions about the sustainability of what's going on in Europe right now.

hmmm.

Liverpool and Manchester Untied are on the brink of financial ruin. Each club was purchased by an American investor, who used the club as collateral for the necessary funds to acquire it. And each club has seen its economic fortunes take a dive.

Hell of a typo.

Reminds me of this story:

1999- President Bill Clinton was acquitted in his Impeachment trial in the Senate stemming from his affair with young intern Monica Lewinsky. During the trial word leaked out that several of the president’s chief critics like Representative Robert Livingston and Newt Gingrich also had extramarital affairs or sexually harassed their female employees. Chief Justice William Rheinquist, high on painkillers, presided over the trial with his dark Justices’ robes adorned with some gold stripes on the sleeves, the first time any Supreme Court Justice robes had any such adornment. He got the idea watching the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta Iolanthe. The Parker Pen Company had created special monogrammed pens for the Senator’s use during the trial. But when the pens were used it was discovered they all had the name United States misspelled on them- they read the Untied States of America. Others said it was a fitting statement on the state of the government at the time.

I'm sure some rich people are just waiting for the day when the Glazers announce they will sell. United would be a heck of a get for someone.

I do hope Pool gets a buyer because these clubs are still great clubs and deserve to be secure.

Oh, I wish the loss had been to anyone else. But the last thing Spurs need right now are more matches. I'd rather they be able to beat Arsenal in league play or a Champions League match later in the season with healthy players than a September Carling Cup match. You gotta take the long view.

That's the approach Arsenal has taken at times in the past by playing all kids in the Carling, and has been roundly criticized. Really, both squads played a good number of kids, and a few older, wiser heads. I've read a few articles claiming that Arsenal played a much more experienced lineup than Spurs, but to me they seem pretty similar. I don't think this match tells you much about how the first teams match up, but I think it says something about the quality depth of the two squads. Assuming Arsenal don't get another big-time matchup in the next round, I expect they'll go back to playing most, if not all, kids in their next Carling Cup match.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

CONCACAF CL right now Seattle is up 2-0 on Monterrey in the start of the second half.

So time for a CONCACAF nefarious shenanigans alert.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

And there it is, 75th minute Monterrey scores 2 in 2 minutes. 2-2 now.

It always happens.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

That wasn't shenanigans so much as Seattle completely losing the plot. There were bad blunders on goals #1 and #3 for Monterrey.

Shenanigans is an all encompassing word for MLS-MFL games in Mexico. Referee shenanigans, player shenanigans, losing leads in mere minutes shenangans, the ball going through the goalies fingers in stoppage time shenanigans...

MLS teams don't just lose in Mexico, they lose spectacularly.

In the league, yes - but MLS teams have beaten Mexican teams in the previous CONCACAF Champions Cup - DC United won it in 1998 with wins over Leon and Toluca - both games were in the US, however.

LA won the CCC in 2000, as well - but didn't face any Mexican teams in the competition.

DC United also won a home leg against Pachuca 2-0 in 2008, but lost the home and home on aggregate. Houston also won their home and opening leg against Pachuca 2-0 in 2007, only to drop the road leg 5-2 and lose on aggregate 5-4.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

The issue isn't winning in the U.S., that's happened semi-regularly, it's winning in Mexico.
