World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Hutton, King, Bassong, Assou-Ekotto;

Aside from Hutton, that's not terrible.

Hutton's the only one not carrying an injury of some sort. All three of the others had to pass fitness tests today. Which, to be fair, they did. And relying on the health of Ledley King is a problem in and of itself. But as late as this morning there was discussion of starting Corluka at central defense.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

FT: Kazan 1 - Barca 1. Both score on deserved penalties.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Spurs 4 - Twente 1 FT.

Spurs got 3 penalties, one iffy (the missed first one, Crouch seemed just as guilty). The third was more clear than the announcers stated, I felt. Anyways, van der Vaart was the best player on the pitch, and I don't look forward to going to San Siro without him. Modric is going to have to control a lot more of the ball than he did today. Either way, no one was injured today, which is another step forward, and Aston Villa at home is a great opportunity to get back on track in the EPL.

Side note, he has two strikes against him (Mexican, Man U), but I really enjoy Chicharito's work. And Michael Carrick is incredibly underrated.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Good day for both my teams. United went to Spain and got all 3 points thanks to Hernandez. (I know that burns a few people on the board.) :D

Gers took care of business against Bursaspor. Maybe both of my clubs will make it to the knockout round.

Is anyone watching Municipal - Columbus?

They are essentially playing in a swimming pool.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Jesus did anyone else see the end of that match?

The Guatemalans, up 2-1 late, started playing "Central American we're in the lead" soccer, and spent the majority of the time flopping around and lying on the ground (which had about 4 inches of standing water). It basically devolved into both benches emptying on the field in the 2nd minute of extra time, and the referee calling the whole thing off.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Had drinks with my friend who works for Fulham earlier tonight. Interesting insights into some of the players and goings-on at the club. Spoiler alert: Danny Murphy really loves Liverpool.

I didn't watch much of the second half, but that penalty was insane on several levels. Crouch practically gave the Twente player a DDT and somehow earned a penalty for Spurs out of it. Crazy refereeing.

DirecTV has a free preview of Fox Soccer Plus (chan 621) Oct 2-8.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Still not over it, huh? Because Henry is the only guy ever to get away with breaking a rule, I guess.

The team should have been the Cosmos from the start if you ask me.

I've never liked him from the very start. He was a diver and a cheat for many years. He was a good player, but he always rubbed me the wrong way. The only team I felt any sympathy for him was when Arragones did his racist rantings about Henry.

You can't tell me that France's uninspired play annoyed you because there was a team in Dublin that would have at least cherished the moment. Les Bleus couldn't be bothered to show any effort in South Africa. The Irish may not have been as talented, but they would've loved the moment.

Plus, I've always been a fan of Robbie Keane. I guess I felt bad he got shafted.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

The 2011-12 New York Cosmos shirt design has been revealed, despite the fact that the club doesn't, you know, EXIST yet.

Well, that and the fact that all MLS teams use adidas, not Umbro.

I'd easily ditch Messeur Handball and the Red Bulls if the Cosmos returned.

Dear god, man. Give it up.
