Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Bradley calls in squad for October friendlies

GOALKEEPERS (2): Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton)
DEFENDERS (8): Carlos Bocanegra (Saint-Étienne), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Eric Lichaj (Aston Villa), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan), Michael Parkhurst (FC Nordsjaelland), Heath Pearce (FC Dallas), Jonathan Spector (West Ham United)
MIDFIELDERS (7): Alejandro Bedoya (Örebro), Michael Bradley (Borussia Moenchengladbach), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Benny Feilhaber (Aarhus), Stuart Holden (Bolton Wanderers), Jermaine Jones (FC Schalke), Brek Shea (FC Dallas)
FORWARDS (3): Jozy Altidore (Villarreal), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Eddie Johnson (Fulham)

Maybe our first look at Jermaine Jones finally?

Bob appears to have kicked his Robbie Findley addiction.

Do we have any evidence Oguchi Onyewu has learned where you are supposed to stand when playing central defense?

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

You can't tell me that France's uninspired play annoyed you because there was a team in Dublin that would have at least cherished the moment. Les Bleus couldn't be bothered to show any effort in South Africa. The Irish may not have been as talented, but they would've loved the moment.
Yeah, don't even remotely care to be honest.
Well, that and the fact that all MLS teams use adidas, not Umbro.
I don't think the plan is for them to join MLS, at least not right away, I thought I read that they're going to be a touring independent team, like (if I'm not mistaken) the Globetrotters were at one point.

So Bob is going with the "no goalkeepers" strategy, eh? :p

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

The friendlies are a good chance for the younger foreign based players to show their stuff, I assume when the MLS season is over and the friendlies pick up again we'll see a few MLS based younger guys get the call up.

Yeah, I'm sure we will. Interesting that two Dallas guys were included though, I think they're in still in the race for the Supporters Shield too.

Hah, nice catch.

Are they going to do the water bucket filled with paper thing??? I love that...get's me every time!!:D

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

So this weekends schedule (w/ prediction in bold):

Wigan v Wolves
Birmingham v Everton
Stoke v Blackburn
Sunderland v Man Utd
Tottenham v Aston Villa
WBA v Bolton
West Ham v Fulham
Man City v Newcastle
Liverpool v Blackpool
Chelsea v Arsenal

Very light on big matchups. Although if the predicted teams win Blackburn would stay in a tie for 5th in the league. :D

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

They are re-jiggering the second division/A-League/NASL again for next year. Wouldn't that be the best outlet for the Cosmos to eventually get into the MLS? There are plenty of second division size stadia in NYC for now, Columbia's football stadium for example.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

An Arsenal win over Chelsea would be nice. If City and United hold serve, could have 4 teams all within a point at the top of the table at the end of the weekend.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

If they don't we could have DIFFERENT teams grouped at the top of the table, and that would be even more interesting. (How did I miss West Brom being in 6th so far?)

Not really. If Chelsea win ,they still have a nice gap on all the other teams.

Columbia would work for a while, but if they go MLS, they would probably want their own stadium. I'm pretty sure we kicked around the idea of them having their own stadium next to the Met's Citi Field, as an excuse to help NYC clean up more of the Iron Triangle. Its a location with Mass Transit already there, and could help be a big part of another NYC Olympic bid perhaps with Citi, Cosmos Stadium, and the US Tennis complex all in that neighborhood.

Spurs:Villans is going to have some impact on the 4-8 order at the end of the year. Like to see Villa get a point there. They have Chelsea next week so if they aren't in form they will quickly head toward the middle of the pack.

Right, but unless they get that MLS bid, there's no reason to build a stadium, so may as well ease into things.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I do want to see the Cosmos because that name has so much tradition. I remember the MetroStars did wear Cosmos throwback jerseys a couple of times, but that was a long time ago.

As for United, I'm not discounting Sunderland. United just scratch out a tough win in Spain and United is notorious for dropping early season points against lesser opponents.

Right. But its always a good idea to plan towards the future. With as much as it would cost to get anything built in NYC, especially in an area like the Iron Triangle, its going to take a lot of capitial on hand to get things done. If they're lucky enough to just happen to have it coinside with a possiable IOC Bid, then they can get extra cash from the USOC to get it done, not to mention the full fledged backing of the political powers that be to get it done.

A two team rivalry in NYC would do well to bost the profile of the MLS a lot. Much even more than what Galaxy/Chivas has done in LA.

Bradley specifically went light on MLS guys because this friendly would be right in the middle of the MLS playoff race.

First, I can't say I really care about the Cosmos brand at all. Doesn't do anything for me one way or another. I do enjoy seeing some Cosmos fanboys get in a twit about it, however.

That said, even if the owner of the Cosmos name was to start a team, that's no way to guarantee MLS inclusion. MLS inclusion will require an ownership group with a) a lot of cash, and b) a stadium solution.

In short, if someone like Fred Wilpon brings the cash and builds a stadium next to Citi Field, then his new team can join MLS as soon as possible. No need for the Cosmos name, no need to play in the USL/NASL/whatever it will be this year if it even exists.

The Wilpons aren't even capable of competently running the one team they ALREADY own, thankyouverymuch.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Side note, I read something a few weeks ago about Chivas looking into their own stadium in San Diego. Something about being tired of being second class citizens in the HDC. Having the Guadalajara club's fan base anywhere there are Mexicans would make that a smooth transition I would think.
