World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

12' Malouda from Drogba.

Who did Chelsea fellate to start the season with West Brom, Wigan, Stoke, West Ham and Blackpool?

Chelsea fans will tell you that they got the easy start to the season, but the upcoming stretch is pretty brutal. Champs League in midweek, then City and Arsenal on the weekend.

Will the real Newcastle United please stand up? Lose by 3 to United, smoke Villa, tie the Wolves, smoke Blackpool....

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Golllly Chelsea are fun to watch play these minnows, I will give you that. Also, as it stands now the top 5 are Chelsea, Arsenal, Man U, Man City, Spurs. Didn't take that too long to shake itself out, huh? (Liverpool 16th, Everton 19th?)

I am really excited for some alternate programming to the NFL at 1:00, ESPN2 has Atletico-Barca.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Barca's lineup is absolutely ridiculous... and they are going with kits to match, mint green.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

0-1 Barca, Messi already after Villa hits the post.

No fellating. Roman said that he could make loved ones "disappear" if they didn't give Chelski that dream schedule. :D

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Man, what a ridiculous goal that was allowed to stand for Blackburn yesterday. Diouf (who else?) knocked down Schwarzer and cleared the way for Samba to head into an empty net. Still, I guess 1-1 was a fair result, bearing in mind Schwarzer's butterfingers at other times during the match. Fulham one of five remaining unbeaten teams in the Premier League.

Yeah, those mint-green Barcelona jerseys are pretty awful. I think they have a hard time finding non-awful colors for road jerseys because they can't use red or blue (so that the road jerseys are sufficiently different from the home jerseys), and they feel like they can't use plain white or plain black because those are associated with Madrid, so what they're left with is the chosen-from-a-box-of-highlighters away shirts we've seen they last four seasons or so.

2-1 Barcelona at the half and in the 58th minute. **** Atletico.

Edit to add: De Gea is making some fabulous saves to keep this a one goal game.

Barcelona hold on for the win, but it could be a costly one as Leo Messi was stretchered off during stoppage time after rolling over on his ankle on a trip by Tomas Ujfalusi.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

United may be the only team I like that actually wins. Beating Liverpool tastes oh so sweet. Berba's bike goal was fantastic.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

No break, but ligament damage in Messi's ankle. Crappy.

Wenger is now charged with using insulting and/or abusive language and behaviour amounting to improper conduct by the FA for actions at the Sunderland match Saturday. Shambolic English FA at its best.

But he was insulting and abusive. I totally agree that some of Dowd's calls were iffy at best, but that hardly excuses Wenger's behavior.

He complained, and vociferously, sure, but I didn't see him do anything that I don't see others do regularly, without any sort of sanction.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

can somebody explain that? What did the USSF want? Input on coaches? Players?

Seems to me the coach is the one who runs the show... the rest is just support and marketing. Soccer, generally, hasn't supported the "coach/GM" model... and frankly, it seems to work fine... the US isn't exactly a world power to show that it can be done differently.

I took it as Klinsmann wanting to be able to pick every coach in the system, from his own staff, all the way down to the U20 and U17 coaches as well. I'm sure there was other stuff too.

I'm kind of skeptical on the way he's portraying things, it just seems crazy to me that Gulati could have had a deal nearly done with Klinsmann- a guy he's been chasing for years now- and walk away over something relatively miniscule like that.
