World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

And at least some followers of such things think Archundia of Mexico is close to a lock for the final.

Yes, I believe Graham Poll tipped him as one of his picks to ref the final before the tournament started.

A bit disappointing for Howard Webb I'd guess, to do so well in the Brazil-Chile Round of 16 match, and then (evidently) be shut out of the quarters, semis, and final.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

There's some speculation that Webb might get the 3rd place game.

I don't know that I'd completely dismiss the possibility that he might displace Archundia on a xxx-Netherlands final, but it works against him that he is AFAIK eligible for the 2014 WCF while Archundia is not (and Archundia had a semi in '06).

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

So FIFA World Footballer of the year and Golden Ball awards are being combined.

Seems like you can't call it World Footballer of the year anymore if you are going to only award it to European players.

Or does Europe just not have a player of the year award anymore?

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Heard some rumors on Twitter about AC Milan possibly being interested in Clint Dempsey.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Really? I think he only had that one dive, and it wasn't all that spectacular! ;)

Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey is said to be on the radar of Italian giants AC Milan, according to reports.

Yahoo! Sports reports that the USA ace who shone at the World Cup finals in South Africa could head to Milan in the summer.

Dempsey had a marvellous season with Fulham in 2009-10 in which he helped his side reach the final of the Europa League, which they lost to Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid.

A Milan source reportedly close to the club board has been quoted by Yahoo! Sports as saying: "[Dempsey] brings a lot of action and energy but he can be creative too. There are some options on the table but Dempsey is a realistic one. A bid is very possible, and soon."

However, a source said to be close to Fulham admitted that no formal bid has come in from the Rossoneri but added that the club are aware that Dempsey would seemingly find it difficult to resist a move to the Serie A giants.

"[Fulham] are aware that if a club like [Milan] comes in it is hard for a player to say no," the source said.

Ironically Serie A has some top teams with very few if any Italians on the team.

I think Inter had 0 Italian internationals, correct me if I'm wrong...in their CL winning line-up.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Because aside from his Mexican misadventure, he's a **** good coach

I don't know about that. His last few jobs:
England- Not bad I suppose, Capello did worse with pretty much the same bunch of players
Man City- I actually quite enjoyed the time under Sven, was sad to see him go.
Mexico- Disaster
Notts County - A fiasco, not really his fault though I suppose
Ivory Coast - Again, a failure

So all in all, I can see why he's still slightly attractive as a candidate, I feel Fulham can do better though.

As for the Bradley rumors, it would be really neat to see an American managing a Premier League club, but I really really don't believe any of those rumors. Fulham is a small club in London, I think hiring someone so foreign as a manager would be very much out of character. Plus, isn't the EPL a pretty big step up in quality for Bob? It's a totally different dynamic from international football as well.

...

Capello did qualifying better than SGE. He never went on to court Sheiks, clubs, disrespecting the FA and the team.

Capello had the same bunch of players? SGE had Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney, Beckham, Scholes, Ferdinand, Campbell, Carragher, Butt, Neville, Ashley Cole, John Terry, Hargreaves, Joe Cole in their prime, and for the most part healthy.

Capello got...Gerrard in his worst season, Rooney injured, Beckham old and gone, Scholes retired, Ferdinand hurt, Campbell retired, Carragher in his worst season, Butt gone, Neville gone, Cole nothing like he was for Arsenal, Terry looking terrible...Joe Cole being hurt and no run of games to get in form...how exactly has the England team stayed the same?

This team, this 2010 World Cup team was weaker in every facet of the pitch than the 2006 World Cup. What was supposed to be different was the coaching making up for the team being weaker.

You're completely full of it.

Look at the injuries particular to the central defense. Jagielka was hurt and his form was such in the 08/09 season that I think he could have started. Same with Jolean Lescott. Instead in two must win games Capello had to choose between Matthew Upson or Carragher who is a shade of his former self...and both times it cost him: individual errors by Upson led to THREE of the FOUR goals that Germany scored. But Carragher was that bad this season he went with the younger player.

England went from having the best central defender depth in the world to starting two gentleman not in the top 6 for English defenders. Terry was going on reputation but after what he tried to pull to undermine Gerrard at camp, he'll likely never wear the shirt again.

Nonsense. That's all fine to say in hindsight, but look at the crap the English media spewed before the Cup. There was none of this junk about how weak the team was. Upson v. Carragher is a false choice, Capello could have picked Dawson instead, but he didn't.

Sven had Rooney when he was young and immature, Capello had him when he was being touted by some as the best player in the world. Ashley Cole is still only 29 and still considered one of the top left backs in international soccer. And on and on and on, we could do this at every position if we wanted to.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Just back from the Region 1 championships.

Some very good soccer being played but as one college coach said to me...'can be boring soccer at times'. Not a lot of creativity on display, but still a lot of exciting games. Losing is certain elimination so the teams tend to be conservative.

While the younger kids are fun to watch, seeing the U19 games from 2 feet away is something. Most/all of those guys are college players so the games are good and there are no weak players to be found.

There are only a few regionals but if you live near one (you'll never get a hotel room) it is worth going for a day...you can see several games at a time for free.
