World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

The quarterback could have been sacked, the referee could still call holding, the quarterback could overthrow the guy or the receiver could still drop the ball. Lots of ways that play could end up not a touchdown.

The Ghana ball was unquestionably going in the net.

I guess I don't see the big deal. In basketball, a player can intentionally foul a player who is going in for an uncontested layup that would put his team behind. If the fouled player misses the two free throws he gets (and the team then doesn't score when they get the ball back), whose fault is it for the loss? The "cheating" player, or the individual who couldn't hit 2 from the line?

I'm saying the ball was in the air and the WR was just about to catch it. If you wanna say he still could have dropped it, fine. I can't argue that.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Did you happen to see the shows? They were very well done and full of history.

Yes. Scotland rivalry has been over since before I was born, since the annual fixture went away. Last time the teams played was in 1999 when England played Scotland in the 1999 European Championships playoff.

Germany is our historical rival and 5-1 is one of the team's greatest victories, but England fans LOATHE Argentina. There is a respect for Germany that doesn't exist for Argentina since we just hate them.

No matter what, during this game you're basically rooting for a stadium implosion. I can't root for either one of them, ever.

Is it still that big of a deal? I know it was in the 80s with the Falklands and the Hand of God and into the 90s...but the last time they played in like 06 or so seemed pretty mundane. Maybe it was because it was a friendly, but I thought the vitriol had cooled considerably from what it had once been.

That friendly in 2005 was probably the most intense friendly I have ever seen, I remember everyone going nuts watching the game when England scored twice in the last 5 minutes (both by Michael Owen) on a cold night in Geneva.

I can't take anymore ours or we's when talking about England...whatever.

I didn't see it...I remember reading something in the press after that match about how things weren't like they used to be. But that may have been simply one "grumpy old man" columnist's opinion and nothing more.

Those rivalry FSC documentaries have been very good, at least the ones I've seen. The Rangers-Celtic one was very accurate and not nearly as insanely biased toward Celtic as most seem to be.

I can't take some idiot like you coming on here and telling me who my fanbase hates more because you watched some show. :D

Wondered why I had you on ignore, took you off, got reminded why.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Rooting for England is "frontrunning"? They haven't won anything in almost 50 years!
Hmm, good point.

Argentina looking a little more threatening on the start of the second half here. I'm starting to warm to Di Maria on the right, but I feel like that's where Messi would be most effective too.

Someone should get Ozil some cosmetics or something; he looks like a cartoon caricature with those circles under his eyes.

.

Every time I see Di Maria it reminds me Milito isn't out there like I think he should be. :D

Neuer is certainly no Andres Kopke.

First of all, there was a :p involved. I'm not a wannabe Brit, so that show is what I was relying on. England fans very well might hate Argentina more at this moment in time. The show wasn't about just the last 30 years.

I don't really care if you have me on ignore or not. Do what you want.

He does have a little Stewie in him.

Come on, this game is meant for extra time...

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

How long will Maradona wait with Aguero and Milito and even Veron on the bench? Seems to me that Maxi Rodriguez has been pretty anonymous for most of the game. Di Maria has looked good since they moved him to the right but Rodriguez has done nothing on the left.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

After watching Maxi stink it up in a Liverpool shirt, I have no idea how he starts for Argentina.

Starters for sides this good don't move on free transfers unless they're getting paid too much for their clubs, which wasn't the case with Maxi.

2-0 Germany. Even Klose can't miss from there.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Don't turn away from the TV. This last twenty minutes is going to be crazy after that goal.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

But you're English, you tell us! Why don't you root for England cricket?

I think he was born in England and India.

Cricket talk though? Riveting.

Well, if this score stands, I will have 2 of the 3 semifinalists and I still have Spain winning it all.
