World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Ghana blew it on the PK. Simple as that.

I'm coming late to the table here, but JD's right. You're not "cheating" when you aren't trying to hide your action, and you're certainly not "cheating" if you violate a rule, get caught, and the consequence is 100% in alignment with the rulebook. If the Uruguayan defender "cheated", is a professional foul cheating as well? It takes away a clear scoring chance, same as the handball did. If so, every last defender who hacks down a guy heading toward goal and gets sent off is likewise a cheater.

Ghana received what they were supposed to: a PK and a golden opportunity to win the game. They did not convert it. It's that simple.

Had the Uruguayan handled the ball on the line, NOT have been caught, and in doing so prevented a goal and his team won (with no Ghana PK before the end of extra time) I'd say the Black Stars were robbed. But that's not how it played out.

On to today.....1-0 already....I was expecting at least 3 goals in it so we're definitely on pace for that.

Let me finish my part of this discussion that I agree that all the correct actions were taking according to the rule book.

What I'm saying is I've never seen a more cynical or "wrong" thing done on a soccer field by a player. Taking the winning goal out of the net is just plain wrong and violates every code of sportsmanship ever imagined. The rules may not punish the offense properly, but that doesn't make it right.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

The guy wanted to win. If he doesn't do that, his team loses and is out of the World Cup. It didn't involve intentionally injuring someone else and didn't involve lying/faking/deceit. I have no problem with it.

BTW, I'd like to thank my local ABC affiliate for reminding me that "That's So Raven" will return next Saturday. :p

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

IMO, there are comparables in sports. Let's say in Football a team needs a touchdown to win on the last play of the game. On that play, the WR is wide open in the endzone and has to be tackled by the defender right before the ball gets there. That's a great play by the defender and the other team will still have a chance to win it on the next play.

Suarez was supposed to just let the ball go in?

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

And that's exactly why I hate FIFA's rules on accumulation of cards.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Was that Leonardo DiCaprio in a University of West Virginia hat?

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

LOL at "our"

BTW, I've seen two international rivalry shows on Fox Soccer featuring England. They were against:

Scotland
Germany

Haven't seen one against Argentina :p

Solid back tracking from Podolski and Klose thus far

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

As much of the ball as they've had, Argentina haven't really looked like scoring.

I think I've decided I want Spain-Holland in the final. (Not that this is all that exciting of a revelation.) Probably the two best soccer countries never to have won the WC.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Did you happen to see the shows? They were very well done and full of history.

You're seriously underestimating the irreparable harm Argentina's invasion of the Falklands caused.

The quarterback could have been sacked, the referee could still call holding, the quarterback could overthrow the guy or the receiver could still drop the ball. Lots of ways that play could end up not a touchdown.

The Ghana ball was unquestionably going in the net.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Are you so foolish as to believe we'd be rooting for Argentina, our most hated rival?

Is it still that big of a deal? I know it was in the 80s with the Falklands and the Hand of God and into the 90s...but the last time they played in like 06 or so seemed pretty mundane. Maybe it was because it was a friendly, but I thought the vitriol had cooled considerably from what it had once been.
