Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

but this was the worst professional foul I have seen in my entire life.

Are you flipping nuts?!?! It was the single greatest foul I have ever seen in my life. It was the absolute most intelligent thing he could have done there.

I see no problem with the handball, the rule, how it was applied or how it affected the game.

What's the average penalty conversion rate? I would guess its at least in the 80s. For all the effort, chance and ability it takes to actually use a goaltending handball, that's worth a 10-20% chance of saving the goal AND the red card.

If FIFA ever decides that a clear goaltending situation is worth awarding a goal, I might not have a very good argument against it, but if you know the rule, why wouldn't you use it to your advantage?

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

You know, I was thinking about how bad I felt for Gyan, but it's all OK.

Twenty years from now, he will be working at a high-end law firm and get pulled over for a DUI and be forced to coach Equatorial Guinea for community service, where, after an initially rough period, the team from Malawi will get the ebola virus, setting Equatorial Guinea up for a playoff run in which they meet Ghana in the final of the tournament...

VERY well done!!

I find it odd that many of you get all bent out of shape about a little diving and yet the most blatant cheating of the World Cup is no big thing.

Diving often times goes uncalled. The infraction was penalized - not only with a PK but with a RC. Yes, they "cheated" but the punishment was doled out whereas diving is far more often than not ignored.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Cheating Uruguayans with one of the most obvious handballs in a long time. Sadly the penalty shot goes off the bar. No justice.

What a brilliant hand-ball

Now that's the kind of thing that kills soccer in America. You benefit from purposely using your hands against the rules.

I'm not really happy that Uruguay cheated and still won. I know the rules and all, but that's just not right. The game winning goal was undeniably going in the net with absolutely no time left. The penalty kick is designed to replicate a lost scoring opportunity, but this wasn't a possible goal. It was a real actual game-winning goal that should have counted. What Suarez did was ten times worse than what Henry did to Ireland.

At least there is a little karma. Uruguay will certainly miss Suarez in the next round. It's not like they lost a replaceable defender or something. He is a cog in their machine. I hope he sits the final as well. If that penalty doesn't come with at least a five match FIFA ban, there is no justice.

I would actually have no problem with a life-time FIFA tournament ban for this. Really.

Kewell's arm was at his side and he leaned into the ball to stop it.

Suarez literally lifted both hands in the air and swung at the ball to knock it out of the air.

Both were bad, but Suarez' was clearly more blatant and cynical.

First of all, Kewell's wasn't even bad...at all. This one was obviously blatant, but I don't blame him one bit. Everyone knows what an intentional hand ball in the box results in. Ghana put themselves in position to win the game on a PK and they couldn't convert.

What are you talking about with a five game/lifetime ban? Just because his intentional hand ball was worse than other ones, that doesn't then give FIFA the power to impose such a penalty.

Ghana blew it on the PK. Simple as that.

Is it just me or does Maradonna's unshaven look make me think he's preparing for a fatwa?

I'm thinking Pablo Escobar Redux.

btw - as much as I want to hate on him, he's managed to do enough coaching/getting out of the way that Capello or Domenech could not.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Uruguay just did what France did and profitted from a handball. :D

All jokes aside, Suarez beat the system. That's it. If Ghana converted, we aren't talking about this at all.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Edit: Sorry, Ghana would have picked 10, probably keeping their goalie out of the shoot-out. So an even number of takers.

Ghana would have to pick one player to sit out, but it can't be the goalie. Whoever sits out can neither take shots nor defend the goal; can't exempt him from shooting while still allowing him to play in net.

Idea is to prevent the team with 10 players from gaining an advantage by having their top guy get the 11th shot while the other team has their GK or another weaker player shooting.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

I don't think you can even say the handball was cheating. For something to be cheating you have to be trying to not get caught.

I could have sworn that I've already seen that movie before somewhere...
Just can't put my finger on it. :)

There's a big difference between trying to fake an injury - looking for sympathy where none is deserved and falsely casting blame on an opposing player for causing the non-existing injury - and choosing to break a rule that leads to significant punishment but a chance to win.

Re: World Soccer XVI: The Sadness

Wait, Maradona is trashing the officiating in other games?

Refs: E tu Diego?

I noticed Maradona trashing that other ref. How odd is that, except that Diego did it.

Germany/Argentina could be a war, especially if Germany goes up late. The man with all the pressure is Ravshan Irmatov, our friend from Uzbekistan. There's no way the Uzbek league has prepared him for this, let's call in Graham Poll instead.

Speaking of referees, I was very impressed with the Japanese ref, Yuichi Nishimura in the Brazil/Netherlands game. I think his performance may have earned him the final. The remaining CONCACAF referee, Carlos Batres of Guatemala, will be doing Spain/Paraguay this afternoon.
