World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

An opinion which only you really hold. The ref was a complete non-factor in that game, which frankly, is a sign he did ok.

That's because nothing happened scoring chance wise for him to blow. But he was letting Algeria hack and dive all over the pitch.

I guarantee you that you'd be here unhappy about his performance if he let Algeria get away with it against the USA. :D

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

I'd even go for an off-field official who could review the tape DURING the match, so that if a card should be retracted, the players on the field could be notified (at a stoppage of play) so that the phantom card wouldn't even affect the play of the current match. That way the phantom card only affects the player's psyche for a couple minutes instead of the whole game.

Bingo. Might be laughed at by some "football" traditionalist bumpkins, but I'm sick and tired of unnecessary cards being handed out.

Would be tempting to go that far, but that would be considered a pretty radical shift there. Plus, it would add to stoppage time. Probably a double check of everything at the end of the match would be a good start. Let the ref on the field be in charge, he just has some chance of fixing a mistake later.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Name 5 Uruguay domestic sides. Hell name one without looking. If you can, then tell me you knew about them on your own, besides Football Manager.

The best refs in the world come from England and Spain and Germany. That's a fact. They're proven by reffing elite competition all year round.

These refs might be good, but the quality of competition they usually ref is not very good at all. Why should Uruguay get 2? Why should Mexico? Their refs don't ref elite competition, its fine for 1 a piece, but it only raises the chances of mistakes because they're not used to the speed.
I'm sorry, but so what? My ignorance of Uruguayan domestic soccer doesn't prove anything. All I see all fall/winter/spring long is you complaining about the refs in the EPL, and now all of a sudden they're the greatest thing since sliced bread? I'm sorry, but what you're saying just doesn't prove that they're the best referees. Look at how much people were complaining about Undiano Mallenco in that Germany-Serbia game, and then look at what a good job the Uzbek ref did in the opening match and (according to everyone but you) the England-Algeria match. There are great refs from little countries (jeez, Uruguay has a tremendous soccer tradition, at least pick on Mali if you want to pick on someone) and crappy refs from big countries.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Really interesting discussion of the French team and the public reaction on France24. All sorts of racial and cultural aspects are playing out. The funniest line by one of the British sociologists on the panel: "there are all these stereotypes about French people: they're moody and arrogant and go on strike on all the time, and then it all gets played out with the soccer team." They were taking it quite comically.

Why are female French intellectuals so hot, by the way? This does not happen in the English speaking world.

I actually went to a game in Uruguay once. Nacional vs Penarol before 65,000+ fans at Estadio Centerario in Montevideo, the stadium that was built for the World Cup in 1930, although much modernized since then. Apparently, it's a major derby game between arch rivals. I was lucky to get a scalped ticket.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

I know that there aren't exactly a lot of other places in Uruguay that could support a team. But when I looked up the Uruguayan top division and saw that all but three teams came from Montevideo, I was quite surprised. That's a lot of derbies.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Have to believe Spain gets those bounces today and puts a few home. 3-0 Spain.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

I would assume the disparity in the fact that European countries only get 1 ref each is because there are so many european sides. Is a ref from Germany allowed to ref an Italy vs New Zealand match? Or is it like the Frozen Four where the ref can't be from either side's confederation?

The refs can ref in their conference I believe.

They might be able to but they haven't yet...
5 refs haven't been used yet:
Joel Aguilar (El Salvador)
Martin Hansson (Sweden)
Martín Vázquez (Uruguay)
Peter O'Leary (New Zealand)
Subkhiddin Mohd Salleh (Malaysia)

8 have been used twice:
Khalil Al Ghamdi (Saudi Arabia)
Ravshan Irmatov (Uzbekistan)
Yuichi Nishimura (Japan)
Eddy Maillet (Seychelles)
Jerome Damon (South Africa)
Koman Coulibaly (Mali)
Benito Archundia (Mexico)
Carlos Batres (Guatemala)
Marco Antonio Rodríguez (Mexico)
Carlos Eugênio Simon (Brazil)
Héctor Baldassi (Argentina)
Jorge Larrionda (Uruguay)
Óscar Ruiz (Colombia)
Pablo Pozo (Chile)
Michael Hester (New Zealand)
Alberto Undiano Mallenco (Spain)
Frank De Bleeckere (Belgium)
Howard Webb (England)
Massimo Busacca (Switzerland)
Olegário Benquerença (Portugal)
Roberto Rosetti (Italy)
Stéphane Lannoy (France)

None have reffed a match involving their own confederation except UEFA vs UEFA has had a UEFA ref 3 times

I'm guessing they assigned each confederation a certain number of refs and then fill in the best ones. That would explain how Uruguay and New Zealand got two and no European country did.

I've posted before that the general quality of European refereeing isn't that great, especially once you get past the top seven or eight guys. For example, I don't think Martin Atkinson would do any better than any or the South American referees at the World Cup, except Jorge Larrionda, of course.

Also, I don't think any American referee belongs this year.

Jair Marrufo was on the preliminary list :p

With all their stars, Navas is on the ball a lot. Haven't been impressed with his crosses in these two games.
