World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Only problem I have with Spain is for all their talent they really really really like to dive and make mountains out of molehills.

The ESPN crew just addressed that. The argument runs that the players readily admit they play it up, because "the don't trust the referees." The commentator was actually fairly sympathetic to that and said it indicates a larger problem with FIFA.

Well, if it is that much of a problem, have a camera follow each player, put an off-field official on each camera, and give him the power to make calls including sportsmanship calls for diving and theatrics. It can't be that expensive, and it's better than having your sport be an international joke.

Question on the Chile goal...

We're people here saying that was offsides? I thought if you played the ball backwards you could not be offsides...

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Honduras doesn't look like they're going to get out of first gear. I hope this isn't a replay of the morning game's 2nd half for the good of CONCACAF.

Original guy was offside, the guy who put the cross in.

Edit: I think the guy who scored was offside as well when the ball was first played in as well.

Correct. I haven't seen the play in question, but to be offsides you have to be in front of the ball, in the offensive half of the field, and behind the next to last defender.

If you're behind the ball, you cannot be offsides.

TBA hates all referees, so you have to take what he says with a grain of salt;)

I thought the initial through ball looked offside. There's no way he could have been offside on the cross though I don't think.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Good to know that soccer powerhouse Saudi Arabia gets a ref in the World Cup but not the USA.

FIFA is a joke.

Complain all you want about smaller soccer nations providing officials, but FIFA has a long history of excellent performances from smaller nations (and plenty of poor ones from big nations).

Have you noticed what big country gets ignored? No ref in the last two World Cups but one from Seychelles.

I really have no idea who you're talking about here. England, check. Spain, check. France, check. Germany, check. Italy, check. Brazil, check. Mexico, check. USA? A bit political, a bit horrible luck (Stott being part of the crew on Poll's monumental brain fart), a bit bad choices (Marrufo).

I'm obviously talking about the USA. I am criticizing the process, not the results with the refs. They should be picking the best ones period, not picking guys who are untested or who are not reffing in decent leagues.
