Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Poor Switzerland. Had a man sent off harshly, then should have seen one of Chile's sent off and didn't, then concede a goal late when BOTH attacking players are offside.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Good to know that soccer powerhouse Saudi Arabia gets a ref in the World Cup but not the USA.

FIFA is a joke.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

He was a mile offside. Good thing he didn't score.

And the Swiss almost tie it.

The ref carded a player for diving?????

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Wait, now that I've seen the Swiss red I'm even more upset.

That's not even a yellow, and then you only give a yellow to the Chilean guy when he INTENTIONALLY hits the Swiss player in the face.

Where's Craig and Jim to defend this travesty?

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Honestly, FIFA would do a whole lot to clean up the games here if they just had an offical who could assess cards after the match, hand them out in clear indicenses of dives, and maybe confer with the ref as well on some of the cards he handed out during the game. Wouldn't affect the game played, but would affect how the teams played in the next games. I'm sure a lot of teams would stop diving if they had guys missing 2 games in a tournement for one dive.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Again, my biggest problem is refs who give out cards to easily. It has such a big impact on the game, you have to be sure of what you're doing.

The red card to Switzerland was a joke. As for the goal, I'd have to see a replay...

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

I don't get the complaints about where the ref is from.

If you've got actual evidence of his qualifications (or lack thereof), let's hear 'em.

For example, Shirtless Guy highlights Uzbekistan, even though the Uzbek ref has a great track record and did a very good job in the opening game between SA and Mexico.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Is there some reason other than your bias why Uruguay shouldn't have two refs?

Name 5 Uruguay domestic sides. Hell name one without looking. If you can, then tell me you knew about them on your own, besides Football Manager.

The best refs in the world come from England and Spain and Germany. That's a fact. They're proven by reffing elite competition all year round.

These refs might be good, but the quality of competition they usually ref is not very good at all. Why should Uruguay get 2? Why should Mexico? Their refs don't ref elite competition, its fine for 1 a piece, but it only raises the chances of mistakes because they're not used to the speed.

And then blew in the England-Algeria match. :D If they're reffing at a high level year around, I would rather have him. Oh and when Collina was young even though he was the best they didn't let him ref World Cup matches for a long time, but this Uzbekistan guy is reffing matches at the age of 32. It's all politics and I'm sick of it.

It doesn't matter where the guy is from, as long as he refs on a regular basis in a high quality environment.

I'd even go for an off-field official who could review the tape DURING the match, so that if a card should be retracted, the players on the field could be notified (at a stoppage of play) so that the phantom card wouldn't even affect the play of the current match. That way the phantom card only affects the player's psyche for a couple minutes instead of the whole game.

Bingo. Might be laughed at by some "football" traditionalist bumpkins, but I'm sick and tired of unnecessary cards being handed out.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Have you seen the refereeing in England? Howard Webb is considered their best referee for cripes sake!

Howard Webb is a decent ref, so was Mike Riley (never got a WC match IIRC). The quality of the EPL is greater than that of the World Cup sides, they play together year-round and the speed is much faster than most of these games.

Even Dowd, Marriner, Bennett, and a handful of US refs are better than most of the guys reffing in the World Cup from these small countries like Seychalles, Mali, etc.
