Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Can we have Ireland play the last game against South Africa? I'm sure they'll show SOME passion. At least more then those cheese eating surrender monkeys.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Heavy rains in Capetown may turn Portugal - North Korea into synchronized swimming.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

We're almost 10 minutes in, and Portugal haven't scored yet.

On the bright side, Ronaldo hasn't dove yet.

And Portugal hits the framework.

I was lucky enough to take a vacation in Portugal in 2004 -- knowing nothing about the country -- and totally loved it. When the 2006 World Cup came around, I was all positioned to be a big Portugal fan. Then I watched how they play. Man was that a big disappointment. Still is. :(

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

1-0 at the half.

It's amazing no one is thinking of goal differential. I was expecting teams to run up the score on the North Koreans...or maybe they're better than expected...

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

What facinates me is that France, England, Germany, Spain, and Italy have struffled. South America is looking good with Uraguay, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Chile so far looking like they could make it. What has happened to the European powers?

It's my opinion that we've wrongly accepted international results played in Europe as "normal" and assume Europe has the best teams. However, every time the World Cup is played on a different continent, European teams struggle. I don't think European teams are that much better than others, they just get the home field advantage a lot.

EDIT: I also believe European referees aren't much better than other referees. Referees from Mali, Argentina, Mexico and the United States get a lot worse press after they make mistakes, but the worst refereeing I've seen has been from top level European referees. All FIFA referees have a lot of good days and a few bad days, but non-European referees do not get the benefit of the doubt.

How often do you hear people comment negatively that Tom Henning Øvrebø is from "Norway" like that's the reason he's incompetent.

That said, if we had a way of letting Massimo Busacca of Switzerland, Roberto Rosetti of Italy and Wolfgang Stark of Germany do all the games, I'd be willing to accept that, mistakes and all.

This is more like it.

3-0 Portugal.

It appears Portugal has discussed goal differential. :D

This is one of my crazy suggestions that they will never do. It would be interesting if during the group stage, instead of giving three points for a win and one for a tie, they just added up total goals. It wouldn't change the nature of the game, but it might make things more exciting.

I thought of this because I think it's sad we needed a goal differential situation to get Portugal out of the shell they've been in for the last year.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

I know that Jong Tae-Se is supposed to be the "People's Rooney," but it appears that from their defending, they also have the "People's Titus Bramble" out there as well.
