Good riddance.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

I just can't call any group with a doormat like North Korea the group of death.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Maybe this is a tad optimistic, but I doubt that anything too terrible happens to the North Koreans. This is 2010, not 1950, things can't just be swept under the rug anymore. The 2011 Asian Cup is in January, don't you think FIFA will be a tad upset if North Korea shows up with 23 new players? Also, players like Jong Tae-se are receiving interest from EPL teams like Blackburn, you don't think there would be an outcry if their summer transfer target somehow disappeared?

I think you're optimistic. I can imagine the manager or a player being arrested "on suspicion of conspiring with the opponent to throw the game," then being "let off with a lighter punishment by the kind heart of the Great Leader" of a few years' imprisonment. If the international community makes a fuss, what of it -- the entire country is under media lock down.

On the other hand, I can imagine the players being feted and treated to pensions for life for playing hard. When you live by the whims of a tyrant, it all depends on what side of the bed he got up on.

Sure, I guess I can see that. But for all of FIFA's incompetence, they are surprisingly decent at keeping government out of football. If North Korea did try to pull something, I think FIFA would hit them with a ban. Such a ban would actually be rather painful for Kim as well. He loves having his team as a propaganda tool (especially the women who are pretty good), and a FIFA ban would take that away.

True, but he could always drum it up as being that FIFA thinks that the North Koreans are so good, that they don't think its fair to the rest of the world, or something like that.

First rule of propaganda, always have a backup plan ready to go. ;)

watched the USA-Algeria game at Conor O'neills in Ann Arbor, the place was nuts went nuts when Donovan scored. Thinking of going there again saturday. Anybody else thinking of going there??

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

I am so pumped for tomorrow...I will be watching on broadcast tv while tailgating for the Brewers game...I have a feeling if the game stays close that there will be quite a gathering around my car. I'm bringing a portable generator and a 32" LCD TV :D

Honduras can still advance somehow right?

Honduras needs to win by at least three goals and Chile has to beat Spain.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Nice dive by Torres. He wasn't even touched.

Awful red card there. Chile got screwed.

Switzerland just needs to score a goal now and they'll advance as long as Spain keeps taking it to Chile. Can't imagine Chile scoring down a man to Spain.
