World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Now that it's clearly impossible for CIV to advance, I'm rooting for NK to come back. It might actually save some lives.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Is anyone watching BRA-POR? Are the teams actually trying to win, or does it look like they're both perfectly happy to draw and advance?

It's evident that the two teams really do not like each other very much. Lots of Portuguese diving, and Meireles just missed a shot from very close.

It looks to me like both sides are trying to win. The tackles (and diving) have been brutal. The Brazilians will settle for a scoreless tie, but they desperately don't want to lose. Portugal are going for the jugular, but they can't penetrate the Brazil defense.

The truly awful thing about that statement is that people probably will be imprisoned or killed over the Wold Cup in North Korea. And there's nothing anyone can do to stop that. Ugh.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Fulham fans, I am so sorry.

What's the deal with Sven, anyway? He keeps getting cushy, high profile gigs, yet he never lasts. He can't be that bad of a manager (how else does he keep getting great new jobs?)... is he just taking big gigs for all the wrong reasons?

In that case, managing a smaller club like Fulham might be the best place for him.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Added time at the end of the game has been changed from "Injury Time" to "Landon Donovan time" :D

So the BRA-POR game has five minutes of Landan Donovan time.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

The next set of matches are probably the ones that I've been anticipating most since the USA/England group.

Spain and Chile are going to be an all out war. Spain should be relentlessly attacking all game as they not only need to win, but could use a few goals for goal differential sake.

Chile isn't known for their defense and they like to be a ball control and attacking style team so it will be interesting to see how they counter a clearly superior Spainish team. If they try and play Spain's game I can see them losing 3-0 and with a 1-0 win by Switzerland, the Swiss will be through.

Switzerland on the other hand is a traditional defensive powerhouse and they need to find a way to put a goal or two (two guarantees advancement) on the board against Honduras.

Can't wait! (Also, I have Switzerland in my money pool so I'll be watching in anticipation.

Unfortunately, regardless of whether the Swiss advance through this round or not, their next opponent would be either Portugal or Brazil.:( :o

Ramires with a great shot that Eduardo had to save.

Jon, the thought that people are going to be imprisoned or die because of a soccer game sickens me.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

On one hand, all the NK players and the coach will be killed. On the other hand, Kim Jong Il will have twelve new bowling balls he can score a 300 with.

There's always defection. Although defecting to South Africa just sounds weird.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Maybe this is a tad optimistic, but I doubt that anything too terrible happens to the North Koreans. This is 2010, not 1950, things can't just be swept under the rug anymore. The 2011 Asian Cup is in January, don't you think FIFA will be a tad upset if North Korea shows up with 23 new players? Also, players like Jong Tae-se are receiving interest from EPL teams like Blackburn, you don't think there would be an outcry if their summer transfer target somehow disappeared?

There you go. He probably saves the skulls of gerbils for his historic -20 rounds of golf.

Indeed.

I just hope I'm wrong. But with that country, we'll literally never know...

I'm sure the families of the players would be treated just great if the players defect...

Another 24 or so bowling balls for the Dear Leader.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

given how badly north korea was beat in two games, i can't call that the group of death anymore. retroactively, basing it on 1-4 in the group, looks like Group D has that honor right now with Serbia finishing 4th (3 points)

They called it the Group of Death because of Kim Jong Il's killing the coach and some players after they got eliminated. :D

If Portugal and Ivory Coast hadn't played a scoreless draw and if Brazil had sat on North Korea's face like they should have, it would have lived up to its billing better.
