World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

If we make it to the semis, I don't care if the other team fields a lineup consisting of an entire team of Peles.

It would just be so awesome to even get there.

Different us. I was talking about the Slovakia us that has to get by the Netherlands in our next game.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

You don't think we could beat a team of 70 year old men?:D

Italy got knocked out today, so I don't think it will come to that.:D

My fault, I thought we were still discussing America's path to the semis.

On the subject of ties, I always laugh when reading MLS scores in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. It lists them as:
Columbus 1 - Salt Lake 1 (tie)

I love how they feel they have to make it clear that it was a tie with the ().

I think the funniest thing about that video is "Some dude in Arkansas."

Second funniest is the guy with the camera (I feel safe in assuming it was a guy) panning down on the girl in front of him's butt at about 1:02, right after the goal.

The people watching in a store window on Broadway in Manhattan are pretty good too.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

The main thing that late goal did yesterday was keep interest in the World Cup in the US. It's on ESPN and being pushed hard. That game ends in a tie and you pretty much have every single talking point as to why soccer sucks wrapped in three games. Eliminated on three draws, including a scoreless one, and your average American hates ties with a burning passion as it is, and get screwed by what appears to the casual fan is subpar or crooked officiating in two consecutive games.

Americans would collectively shrug, flip off the rest of the world, and tell them to keep their corrupt little sport, since if we wanted to watch officials decide games, we'll just watch the NBA and at least see scoring. Good luck pushing it again in 2014 if that had happened.

And I thought I was cynical :p

Though what you say is largely (sadly) true, the fun part of it is that...it's theoretical

What actually happened is what's in the video Priceless and Swami posted. Some have contended that it's not that meaningful as it was Algeria we beat, but I ask: does that matter?

Though there are many ways to attain the end, it's something that sporting events have often found a way to inspire. There are some moments where, for at least a minute or two, no one cares what race the next guy is or what the political makeup of the room is or who is president or that oil is barfing itself into the Gulf of Mexico or that they have to get up early for work or that there is strife at home or they are behind on mortgage payments and so on.

Those moments don't happen often but one happened here. Who cares why, and who cares what might have happened otherwise?

Good article in the Guardian of all places on how much MLS has helped the development of the United States National Team:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2010/jun/24/world-cup-2010-mls-usa

It highlights how many of our players have MLS connections despite its gradually shrinking share of players on the national team. As noted elsewhere, thats not necessarily a bad thing. Argentina as a comparison springs to mind.

I love watching stuff like this. Even in a schmaltzy production like this one -- strings and flutes for the intro? the "world's" reaction, and you show one bar in France? -- the reactions are still real. Would've liked to be in one of them bars.

So if the Ivory Coast beats North Korea 5-0, and Brazil beats Portugal 4-0, they draw lots to see which of Ivory Coast/Portugal goes through the the knockout stages. :D

Speaking of drawing lots, I was really happy to see Italy go out yesterday. However I think it would of been more crushing if they had went out by losing the draw to the Kiwi's.

You do realize the music's from Rudy, right?

Are you sure? If that scenario happens, Portugal will have a +3 GD as will Ivory Coast. Won't Portugal still have more goals scored however? They would have 7, while by my math Ivory Coast would only have 6.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

I'm enjoying America's reaction to the big win. It seems in the past whenever the national consciousness is focused on soccer, the USMNT has come up a little short, but not this time.

I've always liked Dempsey more than Donovan as our #1 guy, but the last two games make me grudgingly admit Donovan may be the man. While my Clint was missing opportunity after opportunity, Donovan nails his chances. I'll probably always like Dempsey better, but I give Donovan my respect. I'm sure some folks at bigger clubs than Everton noticed as well. Donovan may be setting himself up for a massive payday.

My unsung hero award so far goes to Steve Cherundolo. He's been better back there than I ever remember him either for Hannover or USA. I did notice Bradley freed him up to play the whole field like he does at Hannover and I think that helped.

Ghana

As usual, I'm really worried about Ghana. Gyan gives us a look we haven't seen yet and one we don't react well to. Muntari seems to be getting stronger each game and his service to the front is what, IMO, powers this team. I am encouraged that we should be able to score some goals. This could be a wild 4-2 or 3-2 type of game.

As I've mentioned, we are at the anything can happen stage! Go USA!!!

Well in that case IC needs to give up a goal and score an extra goal. :)

Either way, none of that is happening.

I didn't think Muntari even saw the field in the first 2 games? Maybe he got subbed on late, but I don't recall seeing him till game 3.

Checked: No appearance vs Serbia, subbed in at 77th min vs AUS and 64th min vs GER.

Ghana has shown no ability to score in open play so far, so while Gyan is certainly a quality striker I don't think we should be overcommitting our gameplan to him. Them missing Essien is helping us a lot.

Tommy Smyth says Ghana will win tomorrow.

Guess we don't have to watch. :p

He's still bitter about a certain home country getting screwed out of a World Cup berth by a certain other country that just got eliminated that I'm not allowed to mention for the fear of raising the ire of the whole message board. :D
