World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

While I would love to see Slovakia advance, we get the Netherlands, and, well, I'm not that crazy...

While the Dutch have been impressive...We all know their tendency to become the Buffalo Bills of the World Cup once it gets to the knockout stage.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

One of Ghana, South Korea, Uruguay or the USA will be in the semi-finals.

Yeah. That's freaking crazy.

Uruguay would be the one team that wouldn't totally re-write the record books or shock the world since they've been there before and won it, albeit a very long time ago.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Yeah but the Bills get to the final and then lose. That does not help us.

If we make it to the semis, I don't care if the other team fields a lineup consisting of an entire team of Peles.

It would just be so awesome to even get there.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Also funny that its entirely likely that the other semifinal will have one of the following:

Chile (18th in FIFA rankings)
Portugal (3rd. But... c'mon! That's a very unaccomplished 3rd.)
Paraguay (31)
Japan (45)

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

So I've been browsing the internet for stories about yesterday.

Story here

Without looking at the URL...10 bucks says alot of you would be able to guess the scribe correctly without any hesitation. It puts the racial/political spoin on the World Cup and that being the reason the writer hates the Cup.

Seriously, doesn't that writer get tired of being a one-trick pony? I guess it keeps him his job, but my god...

Its like a sociology professor was given a case of beer and a sports writer's job

edit: no real direct and true race baiting... he did call people "bigots" though

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

His racial/political take is rather stupid, but he's right about our pretending like this was some major upset or critical event in the history of American soccer.

We barely eeked out of a group that we were supposed to have a semblence of control over once we tied England. Honestly, while no one wanted to take Algeria and Slovenia lightly, I don't think any one of us really expected this to be anything besides a relatively decisive advancement of the US and England. Instead, we both managed to crawl out with a +1 GD and one win apeice. We're (supposedly) the 14th best team in the world, for crying out loud. Not to take it for granted, but we're supposed to be able to make it out of the group stage.

That's not to deny the incredible drama that was the Donovan goal, but that drama alone shouldn't vault this into some sort of incredible acheivement by our men's team. Talk to me about that when we reach our first semi. Or at least if we put up a good battle with Uruguay in the quarters.

The other squad could be the All-Time 11. By that point it's all gravy.

So, gearing up for Saturday with Miracle, Rocky and Hoosiers. What am I missing?

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Oh, here's a message from yesterday's hero

Not sure if you guys saw this but it brings tears to my eyes every time. Thank you all so much...we can't do it without you guys. Believe!

You don't think we could beat a team of 70 year old men?:D

Seriously, I agree. So long as they're competitive and, if they lose, they force the other team to play well, I'd be ecstatic.

Well, my glass is half full.

Sure, the points and the standings don't look that good, but our play on the field was not bad. If you count the two legitimate goals that were waved off, we won the group going away. And, we generated numerous additional grade-A chances from both open play and set pieces, especially against Slovenia and Algeria, but also vs. England. Against Slovenia and England, many/most of those chances were when we were playing behind and they were focusing on defense - even then, we were able to solve their defenses and play some exciting soccer.

My only concern was the lack of finishing - Altidore especially needs to calm down. He's like a steam locomotive charging into the box, powering through defenders, which is great - I thought he really wreaked havoc on the defenses at times. But when it's his time to shoot on goal, it would be nice if he could ratchet that pace back just a bit and put some touch on the ball.

The main thing that late goal did yesterday was keep interest in the World Cup in the US. It's on ESPN and being pushed hard. That game ends in a tie and you pretty much have every single talking point as to why soccer sucks wrapped in three games. Eliminated on three draws, including a scoreless one, and your average American hates ties with a burning passion as it is, and get screwed by what appears to the casual fan is subpar or crooked officiating in two consecutive games.

Americans would collectively shrug, flip off the rest of the world, and tell them to keep their corrupt little sport, since if we wanted to watch officials decide games, we'll just watch the NBA and at least see scoring. Good luck pushing it again in 2014 if that had happened.

Exactly. (I was on here this morning trying to cobble together a similar point but couldn't make it work. You did.)

It's not like American soccer averted its own destruction because I think the last 20 years has established a core generation that will have at least a casual interest indefinitely, but it did avert its recession.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

... and your average American hates ties with a burning passion as it is ...

Which is stupid.

Frankly, on a scale of 0 to 2, I'd rate ties somewhere as a 1. I'd probably rank a loss as a 0.

In fact, on a scale of 0 to 3... I'd probably do the same.

Americans would collectively shrug, flip off the rest of the world, and tell them to keep their corrupt little sport, since if we wanted to watch officials decide games, we'll just watch the NBA and at least see scoring. Good luck pushing it again in 2014 if that had happened.

Ha!
