World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Interesting announcements by MLS, keeping the balanced schedule, expanding the playoffs to 10 teams with the 4 and 5 seeds in each conference playing off. Reserve league coming back.

They also mentioned considering the International Calendar, which soccer writers are already dismissing as pandering to FIFA prior to the WC vote. It will be dropped after December.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Feel terrible for George John. Just in the wrong place at the wrong time there.

Great finish though with Dallas throwing everything forward.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Very enjoyable game. Some great chances for Dallas late there.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Good for the Rapids! Can't say I ever expected them to win anything, but it's great to see them pull this out.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Speaking of... any comment from resident experts on who to look for in our draft?

Well, with the caveat that I don't know much about the contract status of many of these players (and that's a huge part of the strategery and calculated risk here), there are some interesting players available:

Dax McCarty just had a very nice game in the MLS Cup final.
Salou Ibrahim is another.
Atiba Harris - surprised he's available.
A D like Pat Phelan is young and has starting experience - he'd be a nice pickup.

Lots of underperforming Designated Players are available, as well.

Robbie Findley is available, too. He would be a nice player, but he's said he wants to go to Europe and his contract is up.

Some of the names are misleading. Take Bornstein - he would be a nice pickup, but his contract is up and will be playing in Mexico next season.

Some nice players available, but you'd need to consider age and contract status as the two biggest factors.

So Portland have drafted Robbie Findley and Jonathan Bornstein. I guess they receive allocation money, but still that's kind of odd.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Tottenham up on Werder Bremen, Kaboul scored in the first 10'.

If they win this match, they are through.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Modric! 45+'! 2-0 Spurs into the half!

So Portland have drafted Robbie Findley and Jonathan Bornstein. I guess they receive allocation money, but still that's kind of odd.

There's speculation that because of a rule exploit they can hold their rights indefinitely and not even have to protect them from the next expansion draft. I find that difficult to believe, but I also find it odd they would both be taken.

1. FC Dallas MF Dax McCarty
2. Columbus D Eric Brunner
3. Columbus MF Adam Moffat
4. Colorado D Anthony Wallace

I have no idea who any of these players are. I did read some blog posts that were happy with their D selections.

ManU/Rangers has been much better on the second leg.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Wow. #1 Pick McCarty traded to DC.

As a DCU fan, I like it. Sad to see Wallace go, he's a very promising player - but he's best suited on the wing, and DCU now has a lot of players that can fill that role. We do need DMids, and McCarty ("the ginger Beckerman" - as seen on BigSoccer) is a great pickup for us. I gather he just re-signed, as well.

Two somewhat recognizable US National team/World Cup players who can help sell tickets...if they stay in the USA...
