World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Portsmouth had a rough loss to Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.

Down 2-0, Pompey came back to tie it, only to give up a goal 80 minutes in. :/

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Barcelona have announced on their official website that they've agreed a fee with PSV for the transfer of 24-year-old Dutch midfielder Ibrahim Afellay during the winter. I guess it's not terribly surprising that Guardiola would want to add to a squad that has, at the moment, just 19 senior players in it.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

I know this sounds lame, but every time I see "Tshabalala", I think of "Kiss The Girl" from The Little Mermaid.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Having a playoff that begins with a home-and-home then goes to single elimination would be like having the Division Series be best of seven and the Championship and World Series be best of three.

Or a conference QF best-of-three and then the SF and F as single elimi... hey. Wait a minute!

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

The FIFA Technical reports on the bids just came out.

Qatar was eviscerated, which hopefully kills any idea that they would be a suitable host among voters, although this might mean Qatar simply has to double their bribe money.

The US got a predictably good rating, although that was never really a concern. The report did cite "legal issues" and "lack of government support" as concerns going forward.

If they think the US isn't getting support now, just wait til January. :D

I was hoping for KC FC or FC KC because it would sound so symmetrical.

Somebody probably pointed out the ease at which opponents supporters would add a 'U' to that in signage etc. and cause the eye to come up with a different impression.

Ah crap, forgot to set the DVR for this afternoon's match.

Yeah, I can see the problem if people think they are going to a UFC fight...

Hmm. Lack of government support = insufficient bribes? Legal issues = the silly police will arrest us for taking bribes?

Everything about it is stupid.
I agree, I think the stealing of team names from countries that speak languages other than English is ridiculous (with some exception for teams like Chivas). I think the teams should embrace the fact that we are somewhat unique in the world in referring to the sport as soccer more often than football and use the abbreviation SC without any foreign words. Using words like City, Town, United etc... would be fine with me too.
