World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

To be fair, the wall was set inside the box, so if they hadn't illegally encroached, it wouldn't have been close.

I will comment no further, as this ref, like all refs, are pathologically biased against every team you support.

I'll "only say", that you cede your so called moral high ground with your snarky comment.

Not only did a massive number of the challenges go against Liverpool, (including the penalty given and the two penalties NOT given) there were 6 yellow cards to 0. Liverpool was no more physical than Spurs in the game and I could understand there being a small disparity, but 6?

Spurs were the better side from the 60 minute mark onward. They deserved to win.

What I don't believe for one second is that they would help ticket sales. You really think Portlanders are saying to each other, "Hey, we signed that guy whose most notable contribution at the World Cup was getting hit in the face with the ball and earning a yellow card! He scored 6 goals in 24 games this year! We must buy tickets now!"

Portland is a self-sustaining soccer community, you don't need gimmickry to sell tickets there. This isn't like bringing hockey to Nashville -- Portland calls itself "Soccer City."

Findley played at Oregon State, so there's that.

This does matter, though. PNWites are very proud of homegrown talent. Heck, Tonya Harding is still popular. :)

We're into the 88th minute and the USA women lead 1-0 over Italy.

Barring two goals scored by Italy, the USA women will qualify for the World Cup.
How does it work that a match against Italy helps determine if the U.S. qualifies for the World Cup? I assume womens' qualifying is rather different than mens'?

Not a good sign. I like Olsen, and I think he'll make a fine manager one day - but he has zero experience. This hire says that DCU either got turned down or couldn't afford any of the other people they interviewed. I've heard this is both a money and a control issue - no one wants to work for Kevin Payne.

Here's the thing - this is a last-ditch effort. The fans turned on Onalfo and on Sohen, but they won't turn on Olsen. Payne's gotta face the music here sooner or later.

CONCACAF #3 vs UEFA #5 for the last spot. Mexico and Canada got the autobids. Canada was #1, Mexico #2.

5th place European qualifier vs 3rd place CONCACAF (or womens equivalent) qualifier.

Women only have 16 team WC. So (2.5 NCA, 4.5 EU) plus Germany (host) is already half the field. Leaving 8 spots for Asia, Africa, South America, Oceania.

Not really. I mean less teams qualify, but the general dynamics are the same. Keep in mind that the US got third in CONCACAF qualifying, so they had to go to the inter-Confederation playoff. Think Costa Rica-Uruguay on the men's side this past cycle.

Hey, is there an echo in here?

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Must have been a pretty awful set of performances in CONCACAF qualifying for the women to need to go to that playoff, no?

Also: El Clasico today! Waiting for me on my DVR when I get home tonight! Yay!

Actually it was because they were upset by Mexico in the semifinals of the qualifying tournament (Gold Cup). They do not play a qualification like the Men.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I'm a little behind (say, 8 years) but I thought the US women were still winning all their matches 11-nil and the level of international competition was as much a joke as non-North American women's hockey, except for the PRC who we all knew were cheating.

The US is still #1 but it has gotten a lot closer. The Germans have won the last two World Cups (and are #2) and the Brazilians are #3. Mexico is ranked 22nd but had one good day so they advanced.

The WC draw is coming up in moments...

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

#5 Japan gets 10, 22 and 23.
