Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Two somewhat recognizable US National team/World Cup players who can help sell tickets...if they stay in the USA...

Findley's an "if". There's no "if" on Bornstein. He's signed a deal with Tigres.
Also, if fans in Portland watched the World Cup, they might not be very high on Findley. Don't think I agree with the ticket angle.

Is there compensation if they do bolt for Europe? It would really stink for Portland if that happened.

It would? They knew Bornstein had signed in Mexico and they knew Findley wanted a move to Europe. So why would it stink for Portland?

Portland being Portland. Never have been the smartest on field organization over the years...

There may be allocation money, and perhaps more importantly, I think Portland would retain their MLS rights if they return.

I get the idea of taking a risk with one late round pick on either Findley or Bornstein, but both of them?

Findley played at Oregon State, so there's that.

I think judging by the amount of these players both teams have already traded for either allocation or international slots, neither was all that interested in what was available. So why not take a flyer?

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Right, I can understand taking a flyer on Findley, and maybe Bornstein will come back down the road I suppose.

What I don't believe for one second is that they would help ticket sales. You really think Portlanders are saying to each other, "Hey, we signed that guy whose most notable contribution at the World Cup was getting hit in the face with the ball and earning a yellow card! He scored 6 goals in 24 games this year! We must buy tickets now!"

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

The other thing to consider is that both of these teams are USL (or whatever they call it these days) teams, and they can transfer several players from their USL roster to their MLS roster. Those are going to be the same kind of player you'd get in the late rounds of the expansion draft anyway.

Portsmouth gets its first win in a month, 2-1 over 3rd place Swansea City.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

70': Man U 7 - Blackburn 0

Berbatov has five.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

We're into the 88th minute and the USA women lead 1-0 over Italy.

Barring two goals scored by Italy, the USA women will qualify for the World Cup.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Liverpool gives up a penalty for a handball outside the box, then Kuyt is clearly fouled in the box no penalty.

This ref is dodgy.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Liverpool just cannot beat this team. Can't buy a call today, but such shoddy defending in the second half.

To be fair, the wall was set inside the box, so if they hadn't illegally encroached, it wouldn't have been close.

I will comment no further, as this ref, like all refs, are pathologically biased against every team you support.
