World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

I loved how the coach -- who's not young! -- didn't even flinch when Gattuso headbutted him.

EDIT: Just checked. Coach is Joe Jordan. Fifty-nine years old. Scottish. Probably shouldn't mess with him.

If Jordan were Italian, he would've fell to the ground and acted like he was shot. He wanted to fight Gattuso. Love that.

2-1 to the Arsenal over Barca. Should make for an interesting return match at the Nou Camp.

Wow.. Arsenal scores two highlight reel quality goals and takes down the #1 team in the world and it warrants exactly one post???? Hard to believe. Tough crowd.

I was very happy about the result. Never upset to see Barcelona lose. However, I would bet that some of it is tempered by the fact that it's only one leg done. Great as the result was, you really think Barcelona can't win 1-0 or 3-1 or something in Spain?

Oh yuck, not a Madrid fan I hope.

Oh certainly not. Just not a fan of the mes que un club stuff. They could stand to be knocked down a peg or twelve in my view.

I was thoroughly impressed with the way both London clubs have played. I do think the Gattuso thing overshadowed Arsenal and the fact that Barca can hang 5 or 6 on any given team is tempering the response a little.

Let's hope United doesn't lay a massive egg against OM. Of course, if United wears coal kettle helmets.. i'm sure Marsielle will surrender. :D

Heh. I suppose I see where you're coming from, but they're really a huge part of regional identity in Catalonia. Think of how Red Sox Nation would be if New England had been forcibly incorporated into the United States.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Are the theatrics and antics hampering the playing ability of the Italian teams? The results don't seem to be there in Europe this year.

Of course, the Italian economy may be a serious factor as well.

Oh, I can't believe I didn't mention this in my first post, but the whole courtship of Fabregas through the media and "Barcelona is in his blood" thing also really turns me off to them.

They weren't really there last year either, save the (admittedly large) exception of Inter. I don't think it's theatrics, it's simply not being very good.

I still think Inter can make noise this year, now that the fat waiter has been driven off.

You mean like the Confederacy? Might be why SEC fans seem to really go gonzo for the conference.

Eh, and the Catalans were willing, even enthusiastic participants in Imperial Spain. It wasn't until after the colonies were all gone and really until Franco came to power that their tale of woe began.

I agree with WeWantMore, not a Madrista, but the whole myth that they build players, not buy them and some of their poor behavior against Inter last year after elimination has sorrowed me up La blau grana.

I should add Laporta's recent whining about Fabregas hasn't helped improve my opinion.

Well then maybe they should develop their own youth players instead of poaching the best ones from other teams.

What? I'm not an Arsenal fan, I just think that courting a player in the media like that is very disrespectful.

Plus, Arsenal didn't break any rules in signing him.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Props to Crawley Town for a good game. They have nothing to be ashamed of.

I love that Everton put out Chelski. I guess money (or mob connections) can't buy a trophy this year. :D

ALL of the best teams in Europe poach players from other clubs. Chelsea, Arsenal, Salford, City, Barca.....they ALL do it. It happens everywhere in football.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Patrick Viera with a big day as City move on in 5-0 win over Notts County. Viera with a pair of goals. Dzeko, Richards and Tevez find the net as well.

City will host Villa for spot in quarter finals.

Jmh... really??? You gonna go there with this against Arsenal? That is what you are insinuating... right? That Arsenal poached Fabregas yrs and yrs ago out of the Barca system?? Please. Barca are THE biggest of poachers! Arsenal's system is not bad at all and, actually, they at least go after young and largely unproven talent and bring them in and develop them themselves.

And, there are plenty of Arsenal grown kids to come up through their own system.... Kieran Gibbs, Jack Wilshere, Henri Lansbury, Jay Simpson.. are just some of the kids that are coming thru the Arsenal system and doing well for Arsenal (as well as teams they are loaned to (Simpson is at Hull City... Lansbury is at Norwich City).

Arsenal RARELY goes after proven commodities in the transfer market. Feel free to go after bigger fish like Chelski, Barca, Real Madrid, Man Utd (although they will go after youngsters, too), Liverpool... but, please, Arsenal is the least of the offenders (if this is even a proper slam).

Oh without a doubt... and likely will. My point only was that it was a remarkable win for a team on their backheels most all night against a technically superior side as Barca. I am thrilled that Arsenal found some class goals when they really were being bossed all over the pitch for much of the game. They clearly are maturing and learning to win games they likely should not. It is rare that Arsenal don't win the possession game and are "outpassed" as they were by Barca. Kudos for the win and I will be really interested to see what happens at the Nou Camp if Arsenal scores the first goal of the game there.
