Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

I think next I'm going to get a NY Red Bulls away kit, then probably a Nottingham Forest home kit.

Get your kits through the clubs. Its much easier that way. I get all of my City shirts from the club store. Free shipping usually too. :D

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

RSL 0- 0 Columbus tonight in the first leg of their CCL tie. Columbus finished with 10 men, RSL with 9.

Jair Maruffo appeared to be under the impression that people were there to see him ref.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

I don't have anything in particular in mind, but I maintain that what you said is ridiculous. Complaining that your manager doesn't spend enough money is hardly an example of "realize their team is not some band of angels 100% of the time". How about calling Wenger out for the whining he did about Stoke's long throws, which are certainly as well within the laws of the game as signing players away from other teams' academies.

I doubt I could be more confused by your string of posts.... Wenger barely said boo about Stoke's long throws... I am sure he was more concerned about their hacking and whacking tackling tactics than their throws. But, you are way off topic here. The point is that I will be happy to call out Arsenal whenever AND whatever they are wrong about, but to call them out for signing academy players from other teams (like they are the only ones that do it) is ridiculous on your part-- and I think you know it. Chelski, Man Utd, Liverpool, City, Everton, Real Madrid (huge "violators" of the jmh rule), Barcelona (equally huge "violators"), Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan... and on and on all get kids from other academies. Arsenal has done it... Walcott and Ramsey immediately come to mind... but they also grow their own talent in their own academies.

Hell, there are clubs -- Southampton comes to mind --- that ENCOURAGE teams to come and buy their young players. Crystal Palace is another. It is how they stay operational largely. Victor Moses got Palace 10m pounds.... Walcott got Southampton the same amount. These are teaching clubs. Their academies are very strong and they take youth, teach, and then sell... it is a business. Barnet is another and PSV Eindhoven is another. Benfica is another. These are clubs that SPECIALIZE in this art. I am sure you have heard of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. If not, google him. He is Southampton's next "wonderkid". He is 17 yrs old and Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelski, Man City, and Liverpool are all chasing him like mad. He will get Southampton a minimum of 10m pounds. (http://www.thesportreview.com/tsr/2011/01/alex-oxlade-chamberlain-liverpool-manchester-united/) Don't kid yourself, it IS big business. These feeder clubs DEPEND on the sale of their shining starlets to the bigger clubs. If you don't think that is the case, you are crazy.

From the linked article I cited here: "It is understood that both clubs (Man Utd and Liverpool)—along with Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City—are keeping a close eye on Chamberlain, with Southampton reportedly willing to let the 17-year-old go for £10m.
The midfielder, who is understood to favour a move to Chelsea, is the latest product of a youth system that helped develop the likes of Alan Shearer, Matt Le Tissier, Wayne Bridge, Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott."

I may start my collection after the wedding. I'm leaning towards Giggs as a first purchase, but I don't know. (I know all you haters of United will say I shouldn't get anything, but I don't care. :D)

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Pompey won yesterday, their 3rd straight win, and 3rd straight clean sheet. 10 points clear of relegation.

And I received my Pompey Kit in the mail today! They had free customization and shipping, so the deal was too good to pass up.

It's a bit smaller than I would like, but it's not bad. The tightness of it will force me to get into better shape! :p

Ajax is a big seller too...

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

If anything, Ajax is *the* big seller. The club doesn't exist for personal glory anymore, but instead for profit.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Happy to escape France 0-0. I would've loved an away goal, but I won't complain although I wish we would've worn our coal kettle helmets to the Velodrome. :D

As for jersey, I may get the 99 United road ones (Where Giggsy made his famous run in the FA Cup semi). Also may get my hands on a Scottish team kit. Any suggestions for players?

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Don't get a United shirt.....keep your dignity man!

He's a ManU fan, too late!

If he's going to get a Scottish team kit though I'd think the obvious one would be current ManU midfielder Darren Fletcher.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

I was thinking Fletcher, but I do love the old school Scottish players like Daglish, Souness and McClintock.

Many are closer to it than me but they seem to also exist to develop strong players...which is supposed to be part of the mission. They may be more KC Royals than NY Yankees but part of me says I respect that more than a club that is less capable of producing players and instead just buys them. Is is just my perception? Maybe some/all of the 'buying' clubs also do a great job of developing, just seems the two philosophies would be hard to mesh practically.

Don't call it MAN U. They have to be IN MANCHESTER for that!!! That's like the New York Giants saying they play in New York. United is from Salford. :D

Ajax is a feeder club essentially.
