Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

I so remember when Newcastle thought they were going to challenge Man United. LOL.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Newcastle, though... (facepalm) Sometimes I want to like them, and then they go and do something idiotic like this.
Your problem would easily be solved if you just stopped wanting to like them.

Am I the only one who thinks Chris Hughton looks like an older version of Rio Ferdinand?

Speaking of lookalikes, am I the only who thinks Jol and Andy Gray look a bit alike?

Remember kids: If the ball is coming directly at your face and you raise your hand to defend yourself, it's a penalty. You're supposed to let the ball hit you in the face.

Parts of the body you are not allowed to use to deflect, direct, redirect, stop, or otherwise play the ball in a soccer game:
hands
arms

Parts of the body you are allowed to use:
everything else (includes head)

In other words: Yes, you're supposed to let the ball hit you in the face.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

So, Alex Beam's Boston Globe column today contained this little paragraph:
“None of those sane people are in Liverpool, however. Even by the deranged standards of European soccer, Red fans are totally bonkers. Their excitable Internet fan sites are still agonizing over a 21-year-old soccer riot that killed 96 people.”

That went over about as well as you might expect. It's now been "corrected"

Yeah. They'll let you slide for covering your nuts, but that's a whole different situation.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

If we're talking about guys in a wall, then yeah, it's a different situation because it's ball-to-hand(-to-balls most likely). If the wall lined up and a guy had his hands over his face instead of his crotch and the ball hit him in the hands, I don't think that'd be a penalty either. Moving your hand to deflect the ball (even if it's for the purpose of self-preservation rather than anything to do with the game) is hand-to-ball.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

My issue isn't him blocking it with his hand, while its his natural reaction tough nougies, but with the run up for the penalty. He stopped several times, he should have been forced to re-take.

The way I saw it, he certainly slows down, but I never saw him come to a complete stop, so I think by the current interpretation of the rule, he was okay.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Here's the video. Looks like stone cold penalty to me.
Oh wow, absolutely a penalty. I was going by what I read in the Sky commentary, but yeah, the guy deflects a shot on target with his arm. I don't see how that's debatable.

But yeah, I could see the ref ordering a re-take. Even if he didn't fully stop, the way he slows down (not the stutter steps at the start of the run-up, but the almost-pause after them) is designed to make it look like he is. One thing I've learned from reading You Are The Ref is that the ref has pretty broad discretion to award re-takes for gamesmanship on PKs, which is what this was.

Probably wasn't helped by his decision to already award one re-take.

My understanding from reading the referee forum on BigSoccer is the opposite: The taker has pretty broad discretion to deceive the keeper, as long as he continues to approach the ball without more than a momentary pause.
