Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Im just saying that if you use that as a reason not to give it to Russia, none of the 2018 bids should have been selected...

England?

I know they were a long shot, but I don't think the Netherlands are on that level either.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Some wit from a poster on a Fulham board:
Russia! If only we knew they were looking for an arctic wasteland with a useless transport system and institutional racism for the World Cup.

We could've put in a joint bid with Scotland.

Blackburn getting over their embarrassing 7-1 loss by beating up Wolves 3-0.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Story in the Independent today about the failure of England's 2018 bid contains this tidbit about the 2022 vote:

In the 2022 race there are suggestions that Warner has not delivered his three Concacaf votes to the US which would mean, incredibly, that the American ExCo member Blazer did not even vote for his own country.

Really? Really?

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

I like the fact that it was posted at 420 PM that exonerated a guy named Blazer.

x 2. :)

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

From the article:

"Let there be no doubt, I happily confirm that I voted for the USA in each of the four ballots taken," he said. "I consider it an insult that anyone could presume anything else after 30 years of dedicated service to our sport in America."

You should consider it an insult, Chuck. So, can I assume you'd be in favor of public and transparent voting rather than secret ballots so no one has to presume anything in the future?

This caught my eye:
Mutterings about a rebellion from member countries like England and the United States. Could this be the catalyst for a Kerry Packer-style breakaway?
I'd never believe that...

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Newcastle have sacked Chris Hughton. Seems very harsh for a team in 11th place who just were promoted this year.

It's Newcastle, so no surprise. I kind of like Newcastle, but they are terribly run. Mike Ashley is a disaster as an owner.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Even more interestingly, Martin Jol has resigned from Ajax, setting off a flurry of speculation that he might be in for the Newcastle job.

Gotta think he's going to land on his feet. He quietly led them back from relegation to the top flight, in spite of not being named Alan Shearer.

Newcastle, though... (facepalm) Sometimes I want to like them, and then they go and do something idiotic like this.
