Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

I was in Russia in September/October. Vastly improved since I was there 10 years ago. Visitors will have a great time there - the bigger cities have everything a westerner could want, plus a depth of culture that rivals anything in Europe.

A westerner wants racism toward black players? A westerner wants a media ranked 140th in the world in terms of freedom?

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

But do you really think your "viable alternative" will change anything?

Also, we can't wave our hands and make people around the world like us. It isn't happening.

Barack Obama is probably one of the more humble presidents we've had, or at least is supposedly perceived that way, and he's 0 for 2.

Qatar didn't get the World Cup because they are "humble", they got it because their region is a mess and Sepp thinks his beloved FIFA can change that.

So we should bomb FIFA headquarters?

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

I'd go the other way with it. Give them all the money they want to unearth every single FIFA skeleton. Turn MI-6 loose on it if there's anybody sitting around twiddling their thumbs. Turn the sunlight on those cockroaches up to 11.

Actually, Conservative PMs have been vindictive to the media. Just ask Thames Television after they aired that special called Death on the Rock when it exposed British troops gunning down Provisional IRA members at a ceremony in Gibraltar. Maggie Thatcher decided that Thames' license didn't need to get renewed despite their worldwide reputation for great TV. She also tried going after the Beeb many times during her run as PM. Cameron and the BBC have gone round and round on a few things and this may be the excuse he has to "cut their funding." Like I said, Doctor Who may be filmed inside of the police box next season. :D

http://kevin-blackistone.fanhouse.c...-cup-view-is-progressive-realistic-and-right/

Kevin Blackistone calls the decision to give the World Cup to Qatar "progressive". That's a heck of a funny definition of that word.

The carping in the West is about the fear of Muslims and Islam, or what has become known as Islamophobia. It is what drove Fox News commentator Juan Williams to infamously say a few weeks ago that he gets nervous on airplanes when seeing "... people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslim."

Truth is, of course, that most Muslims aren't set on downing passenger planes anymore than most white men reared Christians, like Timothy McVeigh, are bent on blowing up office buildings during the workweek.

According to a two-year joint study by Duke University's Sanford School of Public Policy and the University of North Carolina, the growth of mosques is "actually a deterrent to the spread of militant Islam and terrorism."

Right, that's it Kevin. You summed it up. It has nothing to do with running around in 115 degree heat and high humidity.

and that they used money to buy the World Cup to be held in a politically unstable region.

I know, Kepler. I know oil plays an important role in all of this. Why do you think we aren't in North Korea? It's because they have no oil.
Kimchi might turn into oil if you give it long enough.
