If I'm not mistaken, he got his U.S. FIFA badge in the last year or so.

(I know he's not originally American... am I completely out to lunch in thinking that he might have had a badge from his original association when he started reffing here?)

That says he was an international ref until 2009, where his age forced him to retire. Which would explain why he wasn't on the FIFA list I was looking at.
Go figure, I thought he was a little younger.

Is New Zealand really as bad as they look?

Right, I know it's obvious, but the manager of a Premier League team saying it on national TV is a bit different from us talking about it here.

From former RIT goalie Jared DeMichiel

I'm proud to b Italian, but the Italian soccer team is a bunch of babies and drivers...pretty embarrassing

Edit: I'm pretty sure he means "divers" :p

"Deeply pathetic" ... a perfect description of Italy's theatrics.

I heard that too. The fact that it's bad enough for the announcers to comment on it is truly telling.

If I had any italian in me, I'd be deeply ashamed at this point.

You don't need to be too good to win that Oceania division. It's NZ, Vanuatu, Fiji, etc etc.

Have they looked that bad? There's a huge gulf in class between the two teams, they've grabbed an early goal, now they're holding on for a point. Good for them.

ESPN.com radio said 9 of Italy's last 14 World Cup goals have been penalty kicks. They must've been counting "shootouts", right? They can't dive THAT much, can they?

Yes, the Italian team are incredibly more skilled at diving than the Kiwis.

If you were watching this game instead of listening to it, you'd know the answer.

Nelsen is having a really good game.

I'm fine with Italy not putting the ball out, but that's a foul.

Wait. You mean call a foul on the Italians? That's a novel idea...

Why do the referees continue to buy the diving? The Italians have a well-earned reputation for diving so the referees should be on to it. I remember during the US-Italy match in '06 a commentator saying the US had developed a reputation for rough play, and the red cards were a reaction to that. Shouldn't the referees have built in the same bias against the Italians? Just once I'd like to see De Rossi dive and the ref to tell him to get his sorry ass up. A yellow card might be asking too much so I'll consider the ref not making the call a good start.

Apologies if this has already been discussed...But is that the ref from Mali and the US match as the off-field official?

OK, I take back what I said about the kiwi inflatable hat. The guy with the full kiwi body suit is the winner.
