JOHANNESBURG -- Police say a South African man who wanted to watch a World Cup match instead of a religious program was beaten to death by his family in the northeastern part of the country.

David Makoeya, a 61-year-old man from the small village of Makweya, Limpopo province, fought with his wife and two children for the remote control on Sunday because he wanted to watch Germany play Australia in the World Cup. The others, however, wanted to watch a gospel show.

"He said, 'No, I want to watch soccer,'" police spokesman Mothemane Malefo said Thursday. "That is when the argument came about.

"In that argument, they started assaulting him."

Malefo said Makoeya got up to change the channel by hand after being refused the remote control and was attacked by his 68-year-old wife Francina and two children, 36-year-old son Collin and 23-year-old daughter Lebogang.

Malefo said he was not sure what the family used to kill Makoeya.

"It appears they banged his head against the wall," Malefo said. "They phoned the police only after he was badly injured, but by the time the police arrived the man was already dead."

All three were arrested Sunday night, but Lebogang was released on $200 bail Tuesday, Malefo said. The other two are still being held in custody.

Malefo said the mother and son will reappear in the local Seshego Magistrates Court on July 27.

"He was always a happy man, never violent," Makoeya's nieces, Miriam and Anna, told the Daily Sun newspaper. "On Saturday, we saw him the last time at a funeral."

The World Cup, being played in Africa for the first time, started Friday and runs through July 11.

Nice world.

30 models all sitting together in the same short-skirted uniform?

People noticed it, and asked questions, which is how the arrests happened.

The Dutch Brewery got exactly what it wanted.

"People" noticed. Did those "people" just happen to work for Budweiser?

Let's say I work for a rival brand and my co-workers and I all decide to attend the World Cup together, we get tickets together, etc. We also decide to wear the exact same thing, since we root for the same country. It just so happens that it's a popular item in our country, and lots of other people are wearing the same thing, too.

We're also ridiculously good looking.

Or how about this - can I wear a giant Miller t-shirt to a game sponsored exclusively by Budweiser?

PS - those are attractive ladies, but hardly 'provocative.' There are regular old fans dressed far more provocatively.

From what's in there, its odd that they say that he was killed. As if someone bashed his head in- Daniel Plainview style. From what I read (hit his head against the wall), it seems possible that he was simply pushed over while they were literally wrestling for control over the TV.

In either case, what a bunch of morons.

Sadly, though, a trip through the comment section of that article will convince you that most of the people commenting on that story are probably no smarter.

Returning to the subject of actual soccer games, France and Mexico are scoreless at the half. Carlos Vela went off injured for Mexico. Jeremy Toulalan has his second yellow card in two matches and will miss France's last group match against South Africa. Guille Franco saw the yellow card early and (IMO) is at risk of seeing a second one for persistent infringement; seems like he's been whistled for 3-4 fouls since then.

Now I know you're making this up.

Wow. Two yellows in different games=1 game suspension. That seems harsh.

It still gets reset after the group stage, right?

I agree. It should be three yellows for the first four games, then reset.

If you get 2 yellow cards in any of the first 3 games, you miss the next game...if you get 1 in the first 3 games, it disappears for the knockout stage...if you accumulate 2 in the knockout stage, you miss the next game.

Dear France,

You aren't going to score by kicking the ball at the net from 60 yards away. You should try kicking it to your own men, preferably on the other side of the center line.

PS: Still rooting for an asteroid...

So I guess even if Mexico lose this game, they still advance if they beat Uruguay, huh?

Depends on the France-South Africa result then.

It would come down to goal differential.

Well Uruguay currently has 4 points. Mexico loses this game, France and Mexico each have 4 points if they beat Uruguay. (Ignoring what happens in RSA-France.)

Going into the last game of the group believing France wins 1-0...

Uruguay has 4 pts, +3 GD
France has 4 points. +1 GD
RSA has 1 point. -3 GD
MEX has 1 point. -1 GD

If Mexico wins against Uruguay they'll also have 4 points but the first tiebreaker is goal differential. Uruguay would advance and so would France.

He's offside. Brutal decision by the linesman.

Hmm... someone told me that the World Cup used H2H as the first tiebreaker like the Spanish league, but I looked it up and he was wrong.

DAMMIT FRANCE STOP SUCKING.

I thought I heard the whistle, but I guess that was just the fans.
