He has to be held to a higher standard than that. That's a call he needs to get right. Sorry that I used brutal. You make so many excuses for their mistakes, I'm overly critical, you're over the top in your excuse making.

Their job is to get the calls right. He didn't get the call right, should I get him a cookie?

I absolutely hate Mexico soccer. However when you gamble on an offsides pinch instead of simply playing defense you put yourself and your team at a huge risk.

I'm not absolving France, if they had played to the whistle, and tracked back when the goalie came out he might have had to try a chip or when he shot on net, a defender might have been there to make a clear off the line.

Not to mention not allowing so much lateral separation. If you're going to play the offside trap, at least stay within 2-3 yards of the forward so you at have a chance to track back if you screw up the timing.

For those of you scoring at home.

France (thru 180 minutes)= 0 goals.

North Korea is Best Korea (thru 90 minutes vs. #1 Brazil) = 1 goal.

So South Africa can still advance (i think GD is first tie breaker).

South Africa need to beat France by a certain score depending on the Mexico/Uruaguay score. But they need that game to have a winner.

1-0 Uruguay/Mexico = 5-0 South Africa/France and goes down from there the more either team wins by.

I would think they would prefer the other match do all the scoring work, as they have shown no capability of scoring a lot of goals.

Any of you read "Inverting the Pyramid: History of Football Tactics" ?

Supposedly excellent.

It seems like France is playing for the long term to get Domenech fired.

I also don't really get the adulation about the Hernandez goal. Nicely taken ball and he did well to slot it home, but he looked to benefit from a blown offsides call and a French side that made the mistake 6 year olds know to avoid: play until you hear a whistle.

He's a Manchester United player now, so of course he gets the Ferguson Fellatio.

Ambush marketing and brand protection is a serious issue. Let's say you are the marketing EVP for Budweiser and you had spent millions of dollars to become an official World Cup Sponsor (to have exclusive rights to the beer category).

Then some two-bit Dutch brewery who didn't pay for those rights just sends 30 hot models into the stadium, all wearing the same provocative outfits designed to draw serious media attention (which is exactly what happened, prompting the arrests).

If I were that marketing EVP for Bud, I'd be ticked off...

I agree with TBA here... the Dutch Brewery is getting WAY more attention now because the World Cup brought attention to the situation and told us who these chicks were supposedly trying to advertise for...all i saw was hot dutch chicks in orange...now I know about some brewery I'd never heard of before because they got detained. Seriously, the World Cup did the marketing for the Dutch Brewery.
Yep, and thats exactly what they wanted there. There was nothing other than a little tag of those miniskirts that mention the brewery. But now with all of this Brewhaha about the ladies getting kicked out, Bavaria is getting a whole lot of free publicity. And if they had simply left the ladies be, then they really wouldn't have gotten anything close to what they're getting now.
Where I live, you can get yourself slapped if you go up to a hot chick in a short skirt and ask her what she's selling.

Yep.

My feeling with a close call like that is, I want them to get it right as often as possible, and when they don't, I want them to be about 50/50 between false positives and false negatives. The really close calls, those aren't the ones I'm going to flip out over the ARs missing. The ones I'm going to flip out over are the ones where it's a couple of feet on either side, rather than part of the body when both players were moving in opposite directions.

How did the official from last night's Lakers-Celtics game get to S. Africa so quickly?

This Germany-Serbia referee is rather card happy. Just sent off Klose for a 2nd yellow, only in the 38th minute.

And nearly immediately afterward, Serbia scores.

card happy referee in the germany-serbia match... klose sent off in the 36th for a second yellow already... second yellow was nothing more than a trip... wasn't malicious, wasn't dangerous or violent... and yet he was sent off anyway... ridiculous decision...

6 yellows in the first 36 minutes (two to klose) and i'd say three were deserved...

... and less than two minutes later, serbia take a 1-0 lead...

Re. the officiating, I think the players have to be prepared for a card-happy ref; this is just the way Undiano Mallenco is. He showed 8 yellows and a straight red in the Real Madrid-Malaga match in the last week of league play in Spain this year, 12 yellows (including one red for a second yellow) in the Barcelona-Sevilla match in the second-to-last week, and (going a little further back) 10 yellows in the final of the 2007 U-20 World Cup between Argentina and the Czech Republic. (This is separate from a philosophical discussion about whether refs should do that, just speaking pragmatically about how players prepare.)
