Give it some time. Most teams have been playing for the draw in their first game trying to at least get a point.

I think we're going to see things start to open up a bit more in the second round of group play now that teams have started to feel each other out and find where they stand and desperation etc starts to become prevalent.

I've been entertained by pretty much every match I've watched so far. The Ivory Coast/Portugal and Spain/Switzerland games were tremendous.

I just made an observation that the quality of games haven't been that good. It's less the cautious approach you suggest and more woeful offensive quality in the final third. Teams have had their chances only to see them go begging.

after forlan's shot was deflected, was there another touch that put the striker offside? couldn't tell on the replay

Right call for penalty, wrong decision for red card. Not a clear goalscoring opportunity.

There was contact, he reacted as if he was shot in the chest though.

I agree, he completely played it up. But the ref has been buying the Uruguay diving all match.

Forlan takes over the Golden Boot lead with the PK...His second goal of the match:cool:

There you have it folks. No longer a 27 player tie for first.

South Africa is in grave danger of being the first hosts to miss unless they come up with a huge upset of France and they get help from Mexico not gaining more than 2 points.

They desperately need France and Mexico to tie or they'll be sunk.

agreed

clear penalty, but also a dive after the fact

anyone get a good luck at the buildup? looked like possible offsides if there was a touch after forlan's shot

The question to me is whether the ref would have given the penalty without his theatrics.

Definitely no touch. Just went back on my DVR to watch it a couple times. Granted, I don't have HD, but pretty sure there was no extra touch.

And, I also agree with a foul, but no red. I didn't think shotguns were allowed on the field. And I'm pretty sure that's what he was "shot" with.

The right call there is a red for the keeper, with a penalty. The foul was behind the last man, doesn't matter the touch was a bit imperfect.

However, there should have also been a yellow for simulation.

This exact situation was the final question on my certification exam.

some of you may not like the way uruguay plays, but they've been solid. south american teams about to improve to 4-0-2 (sorry, using my non-soccer way of reporting a record)

South Africa is finished defending, and it's 3-0.

If that touched off a Uruguay player, it was way offside. Otherwise, it was fine.

It matters a heck of a lot. If the touch was imperfect enough that a defender was going to beat him to the ball, then it's no longer an OGSO. Obviously, that was not Busacca's judgment, and he certainly did have a very good angle to make that decision.

Also be aware that in the USSF, from my understanding, they make a bigger deal about direction; in a USSF game, a red might not have been appropriate in that situation because Suarez was moving away from the goal.

Most importantly this puts Mexico behind the eight ball. Allez Les Bleus!

Well, yes, this is what I was getting at...just couldn't tell from the replay I saw if the in between player touched it.

I believe the ref in charge was Busacca from Switzerland, no?

Spain wouldn't have lost if they started Arriaga, Arriaga II and Pizosa. :D

(Hope someone get's the reference.)

Just finished watching Spain/Swiss. Amazing last 30 minutes from both teams.

A bit unlucky was the play that lead to the Swiss goal. Spain probably deserved a tie, but that's football.

Chile looked great in the early match, but that's tempered by the fact they were playing Honduras.

I'm pretty sure they won't be able to convict the Dutch hotties or the brewery of anything, since clearly most of Europe would refuse to acknowledge Budweiser as being a beer, much less an "official beer" of anything.
