There must be something about the camera placement at this pitch, all of the players look really short.

Well, I can't say anything for Chile, but it's not like Hondurans are known for NBA-like height.

While I was thinking that, I was also thinking it was weird they all looked shorter than the North Koreans.

JOHANNESBURG -- Australia asked FIFA for leniency over Tim Cahill's red card against Germany in a bid to have him back for its third group game against Serbia.

Cahill received an automatic one-match ban covering Saturday's game against Ghana, but FIFA can increase the penalty.

Football Federation Australia chief executive Ben Buckley said Wednesday the organization contacted FIFA claiming a one-match penalty is sufficient. The document the Aussies sent includes a statement from Bastian Schweinsteiger, the German player fouled by Cahill. Schweinsteiger approached Cahill in the mixed zone following the match and told Cahill the red card was undeserved.

Cahill was sent off by referee Marco Rodriguez in the 56th minute of the 4-0 loss Sunday.

"Quite rightly Tim's disappointed, but our submission to FIFA has gone in this morning," Buckley said. "We have done a very comprehensive review of it and we are confident the submission will get a fair and reasonable hearing."

Buckley said a decision was expected from FIFA on Thursday.

Coach Pim Verbeek does not expect FIFA to extend the ban.

"One game is more than enough because [the foul] is not that bad," Verbeek said. "The decision seemed very harsh to me. I have seen worse than that in this tournament so far which have only been yellow cards. A yellow card would have been more than enough."

Australia needs a win in its second match, against Ghana, to revive its chances of making the next stage. It plays Serbia in its third game.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, a straight red carries a two game suspension? Two yellows in one game carries a one game suspension?

I think a red card only equals a one game suspension, unless FIFA feels it was excessively violent, or unsporting, or dangerous, in that case they can add games on to the suspension. Australia is asking them not to do so.

OK it's just a little unclear to me as it was in a bid to have him available for the 3rd game. If nobody thought it was warranted, hard to imagine they would tack on.

Are you kidding me:
FIFA said the women were "used by a large Dutch brewery as an instrument for an ambush marketing campaign," although the dresses had no branding on them.

Great counterattack by the Swiss! Basically the same type of goal the USA scored in the Confederations Cup last year.

Fernando Torres into the game for Spain. Pulling out all the stops now for Espana.

The Spanish corner kicks are atrocious. Even if the Swiss are beating them to 95% of the balls in the air, with as many corners as they've won, they should just keep dropping them at the 6 yard box. One will go in eventually, even if it's an own goal.
