World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

South Africa is 6 hours ahead of Eastern time. So if our game with England is slated for 19:30, is that SA local time? Meaning the game is at 1:30 PM Eastern in the US?
That sounds right. South Africa is GMT+2 and does not have Daylight Saving Time; EDT is GMT-4.

Edit to add: But according to Wikipedia, the game is at 20:30 local. Is it possible that you were looking at a UK-based site and they were giving you the kick off time in British Summer Time (GMT+1)?

19:30 is not 7:30 in SA? Meaning minus 6 hours is 1:30.

Edit: I bet parts of SA are in a different Time zone than the capital. That's probably my confusion.

Just a guess, but daylight savings time might also be a factor. All of SA is one time zone.

Eastern time in the US is GMT -5, South Africa is GMT +2. DST accounts for the extra hour. Spring forward means Eastern Time is really GMT -4.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Also not happy that the US has two 9:30 AM games in the opening round. I took those days off, and was hoping to sleep in!

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

The one who messed up and gave three yellows to one player (Graham Poll)or the one who ruined the Portugal-Holland match? (Valentin Ivanov-Russian)

IMO, he didn't ruin the match, the players did. It was a match reminiscent of the scene in Shaolin Soccer when one team shows up with wrenches.

The one that gave the U.S. 2 reds...oh wait, that's almost all of them...

The FIFA site will automatically translate game time to your time zone.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

1) Bob Bradley isn't even close to the caliber of coach that Herb Brooks is
2) I don't even expect Findley to make the bench most of the games and Bradley's reticence in making substitutions make Rafa look positively Mourinho-esqe. So even if he was on the bench, I doubt Bradley would use him.
3) This pick might make the Theo Walcott pick 4 years ago look awesome. Wait, no it won't, unless both Donovan and Altidore get hurt.

Brooks won three NCAA titles at Minnnesota in the 70s and then the miracle Gold Medal in the 1980 Olympics. After 1980, he never won a major title again. He coached 5 NHL teams, SCSU, some European teams (Davos, French Olympics) and the 2002 US Olympic team (silver) and no championships. Great coach certainly, but may have peaked too early.

Say what you want about Bradley, but he's got his share of hardware so far. Bradley has won the MLS Cup (98), two US Open Cups (98, 00), a Gold Cup (07),qualified the USA as top in its WC Q-group (09), beat top ranked Spain and gave Champion Brazil all they wanted in the Confederations Cup (09). I'll take that record so far. He may turn out to be a dud in the WC, but I will wait how he does in the WC and before I make any judgments as to 'Brooksian' status.

Findley was a role pick for late game speed/defense. He is there to do that job and I think he will see some limited minutes, if only to prepare him for future teams.

So in other words, he won one league title in a minor domestic league, two cup titles in that same minor domestic league, won of the most meaningless continental championships in existence, qualified his team for the World Cup for the 6th time in a row, and didn't win the Confederations Cup.

Yeh.

How many American coaches have done better?

Channel A**Kick

And it's gonna be a sloppy goal...maybe even controversial. Americans (well, soccer fans anyway) will treat it as if we've won the World Cup. Englanders will declare the game meaningless after they advance anyway. We'll remind them we won the Revolutionary War. They'll remind us about GW Bush. We'll ask about MP Balls. They'll be fuming because of our dirty American jokes. We'll be laughing because of their dirty mangy teeth.

I don't think Brooks peaked so much as his days with pros were not as kind to him as his days with amateurs. What he did at the U and in Lake Placid is pretty hard to top, although I suppose I am slightly biased. :)

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

With a couple substitutions for college hockey, this is perfectly reasonable to me.

Yeah, the only problem I can really see with it is that it was addressed to wives, girlfriends, etc... They could have just addressed it to a generic significant other or something, and avoided a lot of controversy.

Or people could stop being offended by every little f-ing joke...

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

In some non-World Cup related news, France beat out Italy and Turkey for the right to host the second biggest soccer tournament in the world:

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=790925&sec=europe&cc=5901

Probably the best choice ultimately. It will have been 4 tournaments since a "major" western European nation hosted and if you're running a 24 team event, its probably best to play it safe for the initial run out.
