World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Didn't see that either of these were mentioned back when they happened, but FIFA tossed Indonesia's bid for the 2022 World Cup because their government didn't support the bid. Not that Indonesia really had a snowball's chance in hell at actually being awarded World Cup, of course.

Also, Japan scaled back their bid to focus on 2022 only at the beginning of May amidst growing conventional wisdom that the 2018 bid is going to Europe. Which has been my operating assumption ever since Blatter basically said he was just kidding about the rotation system - the 2014 tournament in Brazil is already going to be the first time in history that it's been outside of Europe in consecutive tournaments. And then, since the World Cup hasn't been on the same continent twice in a row in 60 years, that makes the 2022 bid for "not Europe."

So, realistically, although there are six bids that are for both 2018 and 2022, the reality is that there are basically two different pools of bids.

2018
Belgium/Netherlands
England
Russia
Portugal/Spain

2022
Australia
Japan
Qatar
South Korea
United States

Put that way, it looks like the biggest obstacle to a US World Cup in 2022 is Australia. Qatar's a longshot, and does anyone really think FIFA would go back to Japan or South Korea before they go back to the US, given how much of a cash cow the '94 Cup was for them?

Yeah, the only way Qatar gets that bid is if they give all the guys on the committee a Boatload of cash. Which they could do, but still then who knows if they'll get enough votes in the end anyways. Its not like they can go and complain that they didn't bribe the voters enough? I'm pretty sure Australia would have some fairly comparable stadiums to the USA, maybe not quite as big or nice as what we have here, but probably better than what SK or Japan have on their own.

What does Australia have right now for their stadiums for their World Cup Bid?? It would be kinda cool to see how they compare to the American bid.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I bet Australia has some nice rugby and cricket stadia to complement their football stadia to make a convincing bid.

I never want to see anyone in Asia ever get a bid besides maybe China.

The problem with Australia is that the rugby and australian rules seasons would be "in season" during the world cup...unlike American Football which wouldn't start until after the World Cup is over...

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Would the fact that three of the stadia are in one city hurt the bid?

That was kinda what I was thinking as well about Oz there TBA. With those Rugby/Aussie Rules stadiums, they would stack up well in the compassity department that the USA would be able to offer.

They could always move the dates of the World Cup to something a that would work a little better for the Austrailia Winter starting to set in perhaps. 2022 is a ways away and they can always tweak the schedules for it.
Thanks for the Info.

Hard to say.... You could always put two of the weaker pools in those two smaller stadiums, and do a packaged deal for the soccer fans that don't have a horse in the race but they love them some WC Footie. Being able to easily take a bus or a light rail to either stadium to pick which match to watch that day, or better yet, being able to do 2 matches in 2 different stadiums?? Whats not to love about that?? And you can save the turf at Stadium Australia for some of the knock out rounds as well.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

England has 3 stadia in London...whats your point?
Reading and Milton Keynes almost count, too. Heck, ALL of England's stadiums on the bid list are within a 6 hour drive of each other (Southampton -> Newcastle/Sunderland) - that'd be like putting all our stadiums between Boston and Philly.

Uhm, it is England we're talking about...the longest drive from one end of england to the other is like 7 hours.

This isn't a benefit to an England bid? It makes travel a heck of a lot easier for the fans. Let's say you are a supporter of like Nigeria. In a US world cup, maybe their group games are in Philly. They advance. Now you have to figure out how to get to Chicago. Our trains suck. You either need to get on a Greyhound or buy a plane ticket. Let's say they advance in Chicago. Now they are in the Round of 8 in Dallas. Etc., etc.

In England, you can stay in one hotel all month and never have to worry about leaving.

Totally agree. As much as I would love an American World Cup, I almost think one in England would be better from a fan's perspective. Hopefully we get to experience both.

If that's the major criterion, and I can't imagine it isn't given the realities of WC economics, the US should definitely win. I wonder how much resentment at having 3 of 4 WCs in English-speaking countries would affect the bid? (SA, Brazil England, US) Also, why isn't China bidding?

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Potentially. FIFA would have to waive one of the requirements for a bid, which is that there are no more than two stadia per city and, I believe, no more than one or two cities with two stadia.

Then again, for a U.S. bid, there's a chance that FIFA would have to waive requirements for the number of seats under a roof, though the advent of retractable-roof places helps us there.

As a practical concern, english speaking countries shouldn't be a problem. When I was in Germany for the last one virtually everyone from all over the globe spoke English across national lines. The merchandise sold and the announcements made were almost always in English and German. Of course I imagine its more a concern about "anglo-saxon" cultural hegemony or something like that.

Millwall fans will have a new set of 23 grounds to terrorize next season. Just promoted to the Championship.
