Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I think, 4 minutes in, we can conclude that we need more Stu Holden and less Benny Feilhaber.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

How do you watch your right back make a run to the 18 and not think "Jeez, maybe I should fill back for him?"

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

So, these warmup matches are basically to remind us that we're lucky to qualify against tiny island nations for the most part?

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Robbie Findley has been very, very impressive.

Great buildup there by the US.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Nice Fight back this half. I'm still holding out irrational hope for a draw against England.

Also, I think the right back "controversy" has been resolved. I'll take the little man.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

After all the shots Bradley takes from outside the box, he chooses to pass on that one?:)

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Potentially. FIFA would have to waive one of the requirements for a bid, which is that there are no more than two stadia per city and, I believe, no more than one or two cities with two stadia.

Then again, for a U.S. bid, there's a chance that FIFA would have to waive requirements for the number of seats under a roof, though the advent of retractable-roof places helps us there.

Of course, those "requirements" are garbage to begin with. When you've got a city of London's size and primacy combined with England's rather small area, what else would you expect?

Same thing with Australia - when you take out the sparsely populated hinterlands, it's even smaller than England would be.

The roof requirement is equally absurd and pays no heed to local geography and climate. There's a reason that so many soccer stadiums in England have roofs and so many football stadiums here do not.

Requirements like this are just another side of the coin of the idiotic people that want MLS to adopt a fall-to-spring schedule.

My faith in God is shaken by the knowledge that Alexi Lalas, in this economy, is gainfully employed.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Opinions on Torres? Start him v. England, or go with a more defensive option?

I would start him. He was one of the main reasons for the more inspired play in the second half.

I don't know what to make of this team heading into the World Cup. Hopefully the friendly next Saturday will help clear things up. At times, we appear to be terrible on the back end, and lethargic on offense. Other times, we are creative through the midfield and generate plenty of chances.

Today's game was a microcosm of how we've been playing. If we can play the way we played in the second half today, I think we can advance out of our group, and depending on matchups, perhaps make another trip to the Quarters.

If we play the way we played the first half, England will put up 4 or 5 on us, and it will be another disappointing trip to the World Stage.

Seriously. He's just better.

I'd be really, really nervous about how he'd hold up against a very physical England side (at least in the midfield).

But it might still be a gamble worth taking. If he's the difference between splitting possession or getting out-possessed 60-40, well, splitting goes a long way towards keeping England off the board.

I think I'd use Edu and Bradley in the central midfield, and bring on Torres in the second half if we are trailing. I don't think he'd hold up against some of England's more bruising midfielders over the course of 90 minutes. Edu is a stronger defender.

He's a good change of pace, like Robbie Findley apparently is (who knew?!)

My midfield and strikers versus England:

----------------------Altidore----------------------
----------------------Dempsey--------------------
Holden--------Edu-------------Bradley------Donovan

Then, depending on the situation, either Gomez or Findley can come in and provide an offensive spark, taking out Holden and sliding Dempsey back to a wing; or Torres can enter for Edu.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

England continues to not impress.

2-1 win over Japan, and they didn't score either of their goals. Yep, they were both own goals. :D
