Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

So since these are the 30 guys in Princeton for the camp, who are the guys that don't have a shot in hell and who are the locks and who is actually on a bubble?

USA's 30-man Provisional World Cup Roster

Goalkeepers - Tim Howard, Marcus Hahnemann, Brad Guzan

Defenders - Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Steve Cherundolo, Jonathan Spector, Jay DeMerit, Jonathan Bornstein, Clarence Goodson, Heath Pearce, Chad Marshall

Midfielders - Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley, Stuart Holden, Ricardo Clark, Maurice Edu, Benny Feilhaber, DaMarcus Beasley, Jose Francisco Torres, Alejandro Bedoya, Robbie Rogers, Sacha Kljestan

Forwards - Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey, Brian Ching, Edson Buddle, Eddie Johnson, Herculez Gomez, Robbie Findley
Not too bad:
Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan, Marcus Hahnemann, Tim Howard.

Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra, Jonathan Bornstein, Steve Cherundolo, Jay DeMerit, Oguchi Onyewu, Jonathan Spector, Clarence Goodson.

Midfielders: DaMarcus Beasley, Michael Bradley, Ricardo Clark, Landon Donovan, Maurice Edu, Benny Feilhaber, Stuart Holden, Jose Torres.

Forwards: Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, Edson Buddle, Herculez Gomez, Robbie Findley.

Only one I was off base on was Findley, which many of us are still surprised about...honestly I would have gone with a guy like Bedoya or another defenseman over Findley.

I agree with you except the other defense man part. We've got nothing and nobody back there in reserve. Hence why Bornstein is on the plane.

I still have some hope of advancing essentially because of our draw. There isn't anybody on Slovenia or Algeria with Donovan or Howard's level of talent and even with the injuries still have a slightly better squad. I see virtually no hope in getting a result against England now with a gimpy Gooch and no Davies. A one goal loss might be a solid result.

I am somewhat worried we might get screwed by the schedule. Depending on how the games play out, England cruising to a last day draw with the Slovenians could be the difference.

And oh yeah, the roster is fine, except for the Findley inclusion. I would've taken Ching, Bedoya, or even Rogers over the guy after last night.

The best coaches always pick guys that can fill roles in their system. I can see why BB would take Findley - it's a role/system pick, not a skill pick over another player. His speed off the bench in counter attack can push opposing defenses backwards, and open up attacking space for other more skilled US players to be more dangerous. Our skill players are not great 1 v 1, and need open space to be effective and create chances.

You know, half the people who see that ad aren't going to get the joke.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Who was the ref that went absolutely bat thit with the yellow/red cards at the last World Cup?

The one who messed up and gave three yellows to one player (Graham Poll)or the one who ruined the Portugal-Holland match? (Valentin Ivanov-Russian)

IMO, he didn't ruin the match, the players did. It was a match reminiscent of the scene in Shaolin Soccer when one team shows up with wrenches.

Jorge Larrionda handed them out like they were going out of style during the US-Italy match. Some would say justifiably though.

I hope you're right. I wouldn't mind seeing some of Findley against Turkey late in the game just to see how he is running at a tired defense.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Someone, anyone, justify the inclusion of Findley.
And "He's fast" is not an acceptable answer.

He's really fast. :p

(Bob's own comments indicate that they wanted someone who could threaten a high defensive line with speed, as we might see defending a lead late in a game. I would think that Findley's main competition for that role was actually more Eddie Johnson than anyone else.)

1) Bob Bradley isn't even close to the caliber of coach that Herb Brooks is
2) I don't even expect Findley to make the bench most of the games and Bradley's reticence in making substitutions make Rafa look positively Mourinho-esqe. So even if he was on the bench, I doubt Bradley would use him.
3) This pick might make the Theo Walcott pick 4 years ago look awesome. Wait, no it won't, unless both Donovan and Altidore get hurt.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

South Africa is 6 hours ahead of Eastern time. So if our game with England is slated for 19:30, is that SA local time? Meaning the game is at 1:30 PM Eastern in the US?

2:30 Eastern.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

19:30 is not 7:30 in SA? Meaning minus 6 hours is 1:30.

Edit: I bet parts of SA are in a different Time zone than the capital. That's probably my confusion.

I don't know. Johannesburg is 6 hours ahead of east coast time, so yeah, 1:30 EST would make sense. But for whatever reason, everyone seems to be saying 2:30. Are you sure local kick off is at 19:30?
