World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Mexico has definitely outplayed England in the first half.

The King-Rio partnership is shoddy. Rio has looked like crap and so has King.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Mexico's hit the post twice, and forced a couple of nice saves out of Robert Green. Ledley King will get credit for the goal obviously, but he's been far from great in defense, England's midfielder has looked a little weak as well. Anyone know why Ochoa isn't in goal for Mexico?
Maybe they figure they've got enough match time in upcoming friendless to see what all three guys have to offer? (Their friendlies leading up to the World Cup are way better than ours, if you ask me.)

I honestly don't know enough about the Mexican national set up to know if Ochoa had been surpassed, or if they were just trying out a different guy. Had gotten used to see the big curly haired guy out there. Plus he seems like one of the few classy Mexicans.

You aren't down with Czech Rep, Turkey, Australia (WC team)?  ;)

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Mexico wound up with 66% possession and 24 shots on goal. The Glen Johnson goal kind of killed off the game in my opinion, plus Fabio switched things up a little, and Gerrard played a little better in a central role. As a US fan, kind of encouraging, but still England showed how much talent the have. Hopefully they keep up their routine of laying eggs in the first half.

One could see this match waking England up (given the US' recent dominance of El Tri) and ensuring that they don't sleepwalk against the Americans.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

They're not BAD teams, but they aren't England, Holland and Italy. :p

Is it a good strategy if you lose to all 3 teams and come in to the WC with no confidence?

That's a tough stretch of games to play right before the WC.

Steve Goff hints that Altidore, Dempsey, Bradley, Donovan, Bocanegra will be in street clothes tonight. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2010/05/us_roster_clues.html

Not so sure how I feel about this, on the one hand, you have to make room in the 23 man squad to make sure everyone gets a look, on the other hand, how will you evaluate how well Gomez, Buddle, Bedoya, and other fringe players can play alongside the main guys, without the main guys being in the team?

I think Bradley wants to make cuts, either actual cuts or de-facto cuts based on this game, and then work on the chemistry and final decisions for later friendlies.

True, but I think a good coach can put a positive spin on well-played losses to good teams. Too bad it isn't still Hugo Sanchez coaching them.

Yeah, and I largely agree with that approach, I'm just not sure how much we can read into how the strikers perform tonight, if their service from midfield is less than it usually is.
As to the final decisions, official 23 man roster will be announced tomorrow, in the 1pm EST hour, live on Sportscenter: http://www.ussoccer.com/News/Mens-N...-2010-FIFA-World-Cup-on-Wednesday-May-26.aspx

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Bob Bradley won the MLS Cup and two Open Cups with Chicago.

We should call him Fire Bob.
