Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

First win for Aston Villa against ManU in 28 meetings.

First win for Aston Villa against ManU at OT since 1983.

Brilliant result!

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

There it is.

First win at Old Trafford for Villa since 1983.

Howard Webb is terrible. You won't see a more obvious penalty than that.

Besides that Arsenal bossed the second half and even if they didn't get that OG from that idiot Glen Johnson, I bet they would have won.

TBA... a few things... first, the Gerrard non-penalty was pretty 50/50... I would not have been upset had it been given, but I have seen worse let go this season. Still, that was early enough in the game that it should not have mattered to Liverpool with regard to their style and run of play the rest of the game (it was 0-0 at the time). I would basically call it unfortunate for Liverpool, but hardly did it cost them the game.

Second, if not for Almunia's dumba ss punch of the ball right to Kuyt in the 8 yds out, Liverpool would have had 0 goals on the day. That was a gifted goal to the Reds. The play I was shocked at was when Torres missed on the 2-on-1 rush in the first half. He should have done better. A relatively weak one-timed shot? My.... not good.

Arsenal rarely challenged in the first half (they had one shot in the first half according to FSC, but I will be dam ned if I could remember it). Wenger realized that they had to press more and make Liverpool work hard defensively in the second half. Before the Johnson OG (obviously very unlucky for Johnson), Arsenal had been working up to the goal nicely with plenty of possession and a few chances. At least they were making Reina actually break a sweat.

The Arshavin goal was pure class. He freed himself and fired from just inside the 18 and Reina had no chance. That is 5 goals scored for him at Anfield in the last two games there. The man is money.

Arsenal 2-1 is probably a pretty just scoreline based on the run of play all game long by both sides. It would be hard to justify that Liverpool should have won the game.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

50-50? He tackled Gerrard in the box and didn't get the ball or even get close to it.

It was 100% a penalty. You're insane if you think thats 50-50. I know you're biased too, but come on.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Hannover scored six goals in the game against Moenchengladbach on Saturday. The problem is, three of them were in their own net!

(Also includes a nice free kick goal by Michael Bradley.)

If you score seven goals and three of them are in your own net, don't you win 4-3?

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Sure, if you assume the other team didn't score any goals of their own.
Granted; I made that assumption because the preview image of the Youtube clip appears to indicate a 4-3 final score, although I suppose that could also have been the score at some point during the game.

Actually, it was only six goals scored by Hannover, but they would have lost even if it were seven, as 'Gladbach also scored two. :)

I said that I would not have argued had it been given. As for 50/50... maybe 20/80 is better. Fact is ... I HAVE seen worse tackles let go this yr with no penalty awarded (and I am betting you have as well).

But football is a funny game.... you get the breaks sometimes and sometimes you don't. I am willing to bet you were not too heartbroken over being awarded this gem earlier this year (that went in Liverpool's favor):

That "penalty" gifted your lads a draw vs Birmingham City (after the Gerrard conversion). The football gods giveth... and they taketh away.

I talked about it then being a ridiculous decision.

It doesn't change the fact that this was equally ludicrous and more often than not Liverpool has bad luck conceding penalties and getting penalties called our way.

I think every fan feels that way about his/her team....
